Title: Electronic Call - BBD...to be Continued
Post by: JWhite22 on July 10, 2013, 07:22:41 PM
In the past we have had success with predator game calls "Fawn in distress" "wounded rabbit" to help bring a bear into the area.  However I personally don't like to sit and blow on a call for hours at a time, I don't mind the sitting part... Electronic calls seem like they would give me a better edge since I could focus more on what's going on around me. Also I could position it so any critter coming in would be drawn to a location were I could set up to have better shooting lanes. I will be hunting areas with minimal pressure off the beaten path. So if anyone has used electronic calls can you give me a review. I imagine they would work if used properly... Should I pull the trigger and get one? What are the pros and cons and I'm thinking the louder the better?

I would like to get my first bear this year and am interested in what the experts have to say on the subject of calling in the summer/fall.

I've used them many times, always seem to go back to my mouth calls.  Can't get my electric call loud enough to suit me and I can put a lot more emotion into my calls.  They do allow more flexibility and keeps their attention off you.  Love calling bears!!

What Machias said. Raspy and put emotion into it. Going to turn some 3 inch barrels today for my RR1 Toneboard. Will be using a couple of them in Blackwood and my Closed reeds. Raspy Raspy Raspy. Can't wait. I will have my Foxpro Fury running on sets Medium Valume. With either Bear cub Distress or elk calf. Rick

I have read many of Hunt wa bear hunting stories and understand hunting a food source is important to finding bear... I would imagine getting high in the mountains/hills and glassing over food sources would be a great way to locate bears. However there are also lots of bears down lower in swampy areas/ foothills but it is much thicker and more difficult to find a bear in the open. I'm hunting the thicker stuff and this is why I'm interested in trying out an electronic game call. There are many out there with a range of prices and reviews seem to be similar.  price range from $199.00 - $600.00 I've never used, heard, or been around someone whose owned this type of call... Bearmanrick has a FoxPro Fury so is this the call to invest in?

P.S.  This is one of the best places to research and buy your electronic call.

:) also go to the Foxpro site. they have calls, sound samples, forums, used callers, etc.
To call bear most folks say call constantly NO Breaks!!, that is hard to do with a mouth call. I also like placing the sound source, caller, away from me, so the animal looks at it not me. You still must be sneaky, down wind etc. You can enhance the electronic wwith your mouth calls.

I run a fury as well and really like the call. They have done some tweeks to it and have the fury 2 out now. I also like the looks of the shockwave but my fury does all I ask it to.

Ok I've looked them over and feel more comfortable with the decision that the lesser expensive one would work for me. FoxProŽ Wildfire 2 Predator Call $199.00... Fury II is $499.00 and the Shockwave is $599.00. I'm thinking for the diy hunt this would be good and since I thinking I know good bear density areas I should hopefully be able to draw one in...now i'll have to find one to negotiate on.  :) Thanks for all the input!

There you go. That is the key to it all. They have to be in the area you are calling to even have a chance. Not all bears will come to a distress call. I have called in areas that I know or have just seen bears and not had them come in. They have to be in the right mood or confident enough to come in as well.

I'm hoping for the confident one!

Most of the time they are the bigger ones  I like the distress calls the best. Use what is in your area. If you have a lot of fawns try the fawn distress. We have not had much luck with cub distress ourselves. I know guys that use it with good luck and in theory it should be a boar or a angry sow that shows up and we have only had the later. I am no pro by any means but put in a fair amount of time calling bear with reasonable luck in lower populated area's. Good luck to you and I hope to see some bear down pic's soon.

I have a foxpro spitfire that I bought a few years back, mainly to try and use it for cougar and bobs, since cats are so keen on picking up movement. While I do like using it, and have called in animals, including bear, I have to stick with bearmanric/machias on this one for sure. I love hand calling with a closed reed, raspy style. I feel I can put more emotion into it and I definetly get more satisfaction out of calling in a bear with a hand call. But that is just me. The spitfire is nice to have around, but I dont really use it very often.

Thanks Saylean for the reply. So what I'm reading is that the electronic calls are used with some success along with hand calling. It's just another option in our tool kit to persuade a bear to come our way. The electronic calls have multiple hunting uses for example calling: coyotes, cougar, bobcat, bear ect. So this would not be a waste of money to purchase? but is used as a hunting method not to live and dead by. Hunting is Hunting be open minded and adapt to the location and situation. If you had the chance to return your FoxPro would you?  Again I appreciate your input.

You're spot on jwhite. No, i don't think I'd return it, as like you said, its just another option. I like to have it, even though i don't use it often.

I'll have to agree, I do much better with hand calls, but sometimes get lazy and just want my foxpro to do the work!  I still have my old Johnny Stewart from the early 90's!  Called a bear in with a hand call but have yet todo the same with the electronic.

Just a quick update. I purchased the FoxPro wildfire 2 just finished reading through the manual and  running through a few sounds. I'm happy with the size very compact and looks like it would fin easily in my day pack. The volume seems good to me and very realistic sounds. The reviews seemed promising. I'm looking forward to having a little fun with the electronic call. I'm going to talk my dad out hunting this year I told him he can shoot the coyotes that come in, but it a bear comes in to the call its mine! Looking forward to spending time in the woods with my dad!
