Hello my name is Barry been hunting Washington for about 5 years and no harvest so far which is fine with me I've seen plenty and learning the stat. I wanted to know if anyone knows where I should scout for elk in this area 651 Satsop.

Hello H2O

I haven't hunted there in quite a while. So all the clear cuts are most likely all grown up and new ones created. Couple of the old timers said they do alot of traveling around in there. I would check the reprod areas. Talk with the loggers and do some scouting. If I remember, there use to be a lot of roads in there, but they might be grated now. Sorry, best I got for you.

thanks arrowflinger i look froward to seeing what this area has to offer during archery season

There really are not many elk in the 651. Check out the elk areas within the unit, they both have a herd. There are a few others scattered but I wouldn't say a good concentration of them.

We used (15+ years ago) to hunt up middle satsop road on the A and B lines, and walked into the G line. Some elk are there but like sirmissalot said, not a good concentration.

Not being local will really limit your success. And by local I mean live within 5 minutes of a herds travel route. The locals wipe out the legal bulls really fast during modern season.
I live across the street from the satsop unit, I'm in the Skok unit. There is a herd that uses my yard as a travel route at times, and they are still hard to hunt.
Archery season you are basically hunting impenetrable swamps. Modern season, the locals kill all the bulls. I'm just not "local" enough yet to be that lucky guy. Still need to put a few more years in :chuckle:
