Reply from Senator Cantwell.  There seems to be an anti-hunting / anti-gun tone to her response; she may not support this bill.  Keep that in mind when it's time to VOTE.  Perhaps communicating to the entire committee would be helpful since our senator may not be supportive of hunters or hunting in Washington State in regard to this bill; we may need to be represented by other members of the committee.

"Thank you for contacting me regarding the Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act.  I appreciate hearing from you on this matter and sincerely regret the delayed response.

As you may know, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) introduced the Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act (S. 170) on January 29, 2013.  If enacted, this legislation would authorize federal public land management officials to cooperate with state officials to open federal public lands to hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting.  This legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources where it is awaiting further review.

I share your belief that safe access to diverse recreational opportunities on federal public lands is vital to maintaining our natural heritage and quality of life. Our waterways, coastal regions, and open spaces are used by many people for many reasons.  Our coasts and open spaces are areas where many priorities, including hunting and fishing, interact and can conflict with one another, especially where space is limited. I believe these areas are precious resources and that protection of these areas is essential for the collective benefit of current and future generations.

Any legislation, which would increase the risk of gun-related accidents or poaching within our federal public lands and national parks, must demonstrate a clear need or purpose.  While I know that recreational use and collection of guns for hunting, sport, and other activities is extremely important to many law-abiding Washingtonians, we must ensure that our public lands and national parks are safe for all visitors. Please be assured I will keep your thoughts in mind should I have the opportunity to consider this legislation in the future.

Thank you again for contacting me to share your thoughts on this matter.  Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if I can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,
Maria Cantwell
United States Senator"

Reply from Senator Cantwell.  There seems to be an anti-hunting / anti-gun tone to her response; I suspect she will not support this bill.  Keep that in mind when it's time to VOTE.  We should all communicate to the entire committee since our senator does not appear to be supportive of hunters or hunting; she needs to be out-voted by other members of the committee.

Communicating to the other members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources might be a good idea.

We need to communicate to the other members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources that Senator Cantwell is not representing us if she opposes the bill by using the ridiculous argument she sent in her response back to us.  They need to know what the sportsmen and sportswomen of this state want, not what Senator Cantwell wants.  She appears to be representing her own anti-hunting/anti-gun philosophies.

I'll see what I can come up with for a suggested communication to the other committee members.  Unfortunately, each of them needs to be contacted through their individual web pages.  They need to know that Senator Cantwell may not be representing the sportsmen and sportswomen of Washington.

If you have an email list that would help many of us to easily respond to the committee. THANKS

Email addresses for all of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources are not readily available.  Writing them will need to be through their individual web sites:

http://www.energy.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/members

The receptionist in the committee's main office suggested communicating with the U.S. Senators in our home state, but we have seen the response from Senator Cantwell.

There are obviously a lot of Washington hunters that do not participate in this forum and never hear about the issues we bring up here.  It is up to each and every one of us to take action and then to pass the information on to other sportsmen and sportswomen in our state.  There are about 275,000 hunters in Washington State; we can be a very powerful and influential voice if we use it.  The only way to use it is to get all of us engaged in these issues.  Please help to pass the word on and encourage others to do the same.  We absolutely must unite to make sure our heritage continues for generations to come.

Washington hunters: ‘Our senator doesn’t support us’

Something of a revolt is brewing among some Evergreen State hunters who are concerned that their interests are being ignored by Sen. Maria Cantwell, and they are chatting it up today, as they have been for several days, on the Hunting-Washington forum.

My email to Maria:

Dear Senator Cantwell,

Please support the Sportsman's Act sponsored by Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.

Hunting is proven to be statistically many times safer than any after-school sports. Both hunting and fishing are part of our national heritage and our public lands should be open to the peoples' pursuit of that heritage. I strongly urge you to cast aside political posturing regarding firearms and vote for this Act.

I look forward to your response. Thank you.

Dear Senator Murray,

Please support or co-sponsor the Sportsmen's Act, sponsored by Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.

This Act ensures that our national heritage of hunting, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors will continue into the future and that the American people are able to use our public lands for those pursuits.

Hunting and fishing are very important family activities, especially to the residents of our great and wild state. Hunting is many times safer than after-school sports. It promotes responsibility and teaches ethics when young hunters are mentored by their older siblings and parents. There are few activities that bring families together like hunting and fishing.

Please confirm your support of this Act and thank you for your consideration of my request. I look forward to your reply.

The Freakin' PMan!! Oh yeah, baby.
