Title: when do blacktail start rubbing?
Post by: Dbax129 on July 21, 2013, 12:01:21 PM
When do blacktail start making rubs on trees?  I'm wondering for scouting, just don't know really.  I assume its when the velvet starts bugging them?

Yeah you wont see anything for at least another month. Just saw 4 bucks the other day looked like they still had some growing to do.

I'd say majority will start toward the middle of September.  Never too early to get out and scout around tho

Just depends on where and what you are looking for ....Blacktail move around a lot ...So scouting early is usually useless ..if you want to kill blacktail consistently I would wait until late October and start scouting then ...Scouting deer in the summer is usually useless unless you are talking whitetail ...blacktail move around way to much ...Just remember the last week in October is when they start marking there territory ....at least while the rut is going on ...once they breed the doe in that area they move on ...I like scouting while I am hunting when it comes to blacktail ...you find fresh horning while you are out there then you best keep pounding that area until he shows himself ...Just hanging out in the area where you find sign is your best bet ...Works every year for me

Another way to put it is ...just ask all these guys who like baiting blacktail all summer long and then ask them how many of those bucks they have shot ...Not many ! :dunno: :chuckle:

I would agree the first week of sept is when most of the fuzzy stuff will come off. Some will be earlier and some be later.

To the OP the third week of August in the area you live. Most of the bucks are hard horned by the 25th of August.

There you go, DBax. 4 weeks or so from now.
