Is anyone catching the pinks yet in the Puget Sound? If so I would love to know where they are in their run, and plan my trips. If anyone knows anything about the pink run in the sound please use this post to bounce around info!!

Yup. Lots.

CP posted up a few pics.....off Point No Point.....probably anywhere in area 9 you could pick up a few.

They're also making appearances in the Nisqually, Skokomish, and Green rivers right now. Also some out at Dash Point. Still early but they're out there.
-
Caught one at Jeff Head last Sunday trolling for kings/coho.
-
I'll be hitting the Snohomish as soon as it opens, ill check back and let you know what I find.

Peak in the sound is in August. It will build from now to mid-August. Right now there are some around. In 2 weeks you won't be able to not catch them.
-
also up in MA7 (san juans) they are running. my buddy released 30 a few days ago...

Wooo I cant wait, Time to start making some leaders.

As much as I don't care to go pink fishing for more than a few hours each year they are around, I am looking forward to the next pink run. My twin boys will be almost 3 and just might be into it. If not, the next run will be a blast.
-
I have been keeping an eye on here http://www.gamefishin.com/ (http://www.gamefishin.com/)
Got some good afternoon tides next week

I'm looking forward to getting them in the river out here. My 5 year old is going to hammer them. I could care less about eating them. Just interested in getting her into a bunch of them. Should be a blast.
-
yes read the updates they been getting hammered since the weekend
-
The run that's in the river now is the early batch, the real run is coming mid August (or the first good rain). I was fishing area 6 over July 4th and they were hitting pretty hard, last weekend was dead because the majority are still in Neah Bay.
-
i wouldnt say theyre "in" yet. last week we fished MA9 3 days and out of 24 hook-ups we only hooked 1 MAYBE 2 humpies. mostly kings with a few silvers around. paitence... paitence... they will come, then you will be sick of them. im glad theyre only every other year :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
they should be getting thick !!!
-
yeah ...guess that's all we will be eating in BH45's house this year :yike:
-
They are all over at Eagle Point, SJ Island, two of us limited in less than two hours last Sunday, with half again as many lost.
-
Sekui last weekend - lots of released native and smaller kings, several Silvers and three pinks out of 30 plus fish. I'd say they aren't in yet..... Give it another week and you won't be able to get through them to the Silvers till these nasty buggers belly up in the rivers..

Oh hello new best friend, care to take me and the lady out sometime? :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: Freezer's looking kinda empty :chuckle:

I think I will hit either dash point or browns point tonight.
I will let you know how I do.

I have seen one pink "porpoise" this week when I was parked next to the Snohomish river while taking a phone call. The very first ones are in the river now.

And the reports from this morning were the same.
Some were catching them off of Night Crawlers :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

So good numbers at Dash and Browns Point now?? or are we blowing smoke? Look's like I might have to squeeze in out there and try to get me one.
-
Whats the best medicine for pinks?
From what I hear a plain sharp hook works fine. :)

My mother in law lives there and we were there visiting, saw it personally. Went out on the dock and in about 10 minutes time saw at least 15 fish hooked.

Nope but they're good IMO. Some people just use them for crab bait?

I don't touch those, just rip the hook from their soft flesh...
-
cool thanks for sharing guys. they look cool too bad they don't taste right. Would be a cool fish for the kids to catch sounds like when they are in it's easy pickings.
-
Here are few pinks from this morning!!!! Can't keep them off the line. Fishing for kings and hooking pinks non-stop.

They taste alright, just a little fishier/drier than a silver. I thought they tasted kind of like silver mixed with canned tuna. When you get down to it even the kings/silvers get turned away by the folks that try to compare salmon to bottomfish like halibut/cabs/lingcod. Pinks are lots of fun to catch. Usually in such big numbers that young kids are constantly getting strikes and even catching, so it keeps their attention span. You can even use light gear that you already have for things like trout.

They're good in the smoker though. 2 parts brown sugar to 1 part salt, some garlic salt. alittle of this, alittle of that. Soak overnight then rinse thoroughly, dry. Throw into smoker until it reaches your desired texture.

I filet the one I caught this morning and BBQed it up with some shrimp kabobs.

Where were you? Eagle Point this morning sucked, one fish in the boat for three lines and about six short bites and quick releases. Saw very few fish getting caught. :(

We hit Eagle point this morning. 4 pinks in 45 min in the boat. one king 1 1/2 hour later. then everything died at slack. My brother got 2 kings in his boat, and lost 3 due to technical difficulties. It was combat fishing at it's finest! I figured about 50 boats, including charters, and one really larger sail boat. all in all... better than working!

Saw that big catamaran, told the guy he was fishing in style, he laughed and said you do what you gotta do. :chuckle:
Congrats on your success. How deep were you guys going for the kings, 120?
-
We hit a double, two pinks, I was pulling up and hit the king about 75' we managed to land one pink and the king. My brother hit all his kings at 80' - 120'. I was surprised we didn't run into more. there were several "bait balls" on the screen between 80 and 120 that we drug through but nothing. The only other surprise we had was a halibut that ripped the reel from my rod and eventually took off with my flasher and spoon. It was my first halibut fight! made the pinks seam like gold fish!
-
Halibut love Pink Salmon... I hear they sit in the mouth of the Sekiu river and slurp them up as the run upstream. I wonder if he took a pink off your hook!

Picked up a nice clipped coho off the beach this morning

I don't care if I catch them with the hump or chrome bright. I don't want to eat them either way, so I might as well catch a dark one!

I had never heard that before. it make since the more I think about how it all went down. too bad the seasons don't over lap I'd leave the pinks on weighted to the bottom. :chuckle: I'd take a halibut over a pink any day!

We used small salmon heads for bait up in Yackutat a few years ago.

Eagle pt and salmon banks catching them between 80 to 100ft. I got there around 5 and limited by 9am. Two rods in the water. The day before I hooked a nice 20lb and about ten minutes a even bigger fish and right when we were about to net it at the boat a seal took it and gave me the fight of a life time. Leader finally broke after about 5 min and me almost going overboard.

Leaving next week for Deception Pass. Any reports from up North would be appreciated.

When I captained a charter boat out of Sitka, my favorite bait hands down for halibut was a fresh pink head with the belly meat still attached. You could have 4 different baits down and jigs and whatever, they always ate the head. Here is a pic for reference

Easy limits on west side of whidbey on saturday. Pinks were boiling and jumping everywhere. Took out neighbors and kids for some fun. They are thick in MA7 and in good numbers in MA9. Tough to get to kings and silvers in many MA7 areas as pinks are so thick that's all you will catch.
Saw some 20-25# kings come in to keystone launch from mid-channel.
