Anglers limited to 1 hatchery chinook salmon
per day in Marine Area 9 beginning July 29
OLYMPIA - Starting Monday (July 29), anglers fishing Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) will be limited to one hatchery chinook as part of their daily limit of two salmon.
State fishery managers are reducing the hatchery chinook limit - down from two per day - to try to stay within the chinook guideline for the area, said Ryan Lothrop, a fish biologist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
"Catch rates in Marine Area 9 have been high since the fishery got under way 10 days ago," said Lothrop. "So we’ve decided to make this change now to try and stay within our catch guideline and avoid closing the area’s hatchery chinook season early."
As of July 25, preliminary estimates indicate anglers in Marine Area 9 had kept or released about 4,300 legal-size chinook since the fishery opened in mid-July. That’s about 66 percent of the 6,528 chinook catch guideline for the hatchery chinook fishery, which is scheduled to be open through August.
The new catch limit will ensure compliance with conservation objectives and state-tribal management plans in Puget Sound, said Lothrop.
Anglers fishing Marine Area 9 also may retain two additional pink salmon, but must release chum salmon and wild chinook. For details on fishing regulations in Marine Area 9, check the fishing regulations pamphlet at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/ (http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/) .

9? 4 & 5 had some really good days earlier in the season (relative to last couple of years---not compared to 20 years ago..or even 10). Eastern part of 6 has had a run of luck. Did it spill into 9?
-
It's a good move. Might keep it open longer. How many kings do you need especially with 2 prime months ahead. If people don't bonk small kings thinking their humpies that would help too. Got 2 today at PT. one was released.

Yes 9, been on fire for some.

Pretty good fishing combined with a ton of effort and a small quota...and that's how you burn through 66% of the guideline in 10 days in a fishery that was supposed to last for 6 weeks!
The fish checker tonight in that neighborhood had checked 40 kings, 50 silvers and 50 pinks for 80 boats. Pretty good for July in the Sound.

The problem is that all released fish are counted twords quota. Good thing we never catch wild fish and never let any go ;)

Do you fish out of a pro-steelheader? Saw a guy in that area yesterday get a couple jigging.

That was me  There was a good bite for us for a couple hours. How'd you do?
-
We got two right as the bite was coming on. Got a call with a family emergency and had to head for the barn. Got back to Everett to find it was a false alarm.
You probably saw us out there. I have a big black Duckworth Offshore.
-
I saw you. We were joking if you'd be willing to trade boats. Athough yours would be tough to free drift. :chuckle:
