Title: petition to "require gun shows to have the same background checks..."
Post by: Redstar on July 26, 2013, 08:48:17 PM
I hate petitions... Heads up, looks like there might be more bs legislation on the way (I know, big surprise).

So we're sitting at the ferry dock in edmonds waiting for the boat... guy trying to get signatures "To make gun shows have the same background checks as stores." Unfortunatly we're in the subaru so of course he asks us...

We did not sign but my gf prevented me from saying anything more than that I'm a proud gun owner...

I am certain the guy walking around and the small handful of people who signed have never actually been to a gun show.

It's tough to be polite in these situations, but a good response might be, "I don't agree with the purpose of this petition, but I will definitely sign the other petition that protects our Second Amendment rights, I-591."

I grilled an early 20's something girl who was trying to get her petition signed outside Walmart last week. I was polite, but I am pretty sure she won't be wanting to stand around trying to get those petitions signed anymore.

Tell them you are going to sign 591 than go find it and do it. There is a listing on this forum where to find 591.

594 is 15 pages of more regulatin.

They had 591 and 594 petitions at the WalMart in Poulsbo the other day.  I signed 591 and then the guy tried to give me 594, told him to get that one out of my sight.

I would of ripped the worthless anti a new one myself. Don't care about my wife telling me not too. They have to be put on the spot and taught a lesson, that if it wasn't for guns, they'd be up the creek.

I've wonder what would happen If you took his signed petitions, like you were going to sign it, and instead light them on fire or toss them into your car, roll up the windows and drive off!

You'd be doing them a big favor. This would be the likely scenario if you did that. They'd call the cops, you'd get your hand slapped and the local news would get ahold of it. They run a story about how this poor guy just doing his job got attacked by a nut job gun lover and had all his signatures stolen. Next thing you know the guy has a line waiting to sign his petition.

You'd get more than a hand slap.
That could be an Assault charge.  And arson. And anything else they might want to throw at you to see if it would stick.

And you WOULD be "doing them a favor."

virtually all of these petition gatherers are paid gatherers, one stopped me outside a Target store the other night and when I questioned her she admitted she really didn't care either way-she was just getting paid by the signature.  Would'nt waste my breath voicing an opinion to them they'll just shrug it off and leave you frustrated beause you don't get a rise out of them.

You might have told him that gun dealers who sell arms at gun shows are already required to do background checks. That more regulation means more opportunity for government intrusion. That with our existing required background checks, the government fails to arrest 75% of criminals who apply to buy firearms and are rejected; that figure being closer to 90% in Chicago. That Chicago has some of the most extensive gun laws, yet it has the highest gun murder rate for any major city in America - and that number is climbing. That if the government can't enforce existing laws, how does it expect to enforce new ones? Or more importantly, if it doesn't have the means with which to enforce these new laws, what is the actual purpose behind passing new ones?

Or, listen to your gf and keep the peace at home!  :chuckle:

I wanted to ask him 3 questions.
1. Have you ever actually been to a gun show?
2. What percentage of guns do you believe are sold at a gun show with background checks already?
3. Where do you think most guns used for criminal purposes come from?

Eh, we were on our way to a family event and in the end, a happy gf was worth more than an argument with an idiot looking for signatures. I did have permission to ask him about it on the way home but we didnt see him.

 :twocents:
Signature gatherers may just be part-time contract workers for a signature gathering company.  They may not care either way about the subject of the petition; they care about getting paid for each signature they get on that piece of paper.

I'm sure the ones backing that crap know the truth on gun shows, they just like to sound smart. I'ts not about gun shows and they know it, it's about private sales. :bash:
