The rendezvous got me excited to the point I am counting down the days already. Only 95 to go in case you were wondering. My youngest daughter and I did some scouting today and stumbled into some good beaver sets.
-
Beaver hut
-
Good lookin spot!
-
Some more of the sign we found
-
More sign
-
Last one
-
Holy Moly looks like a mini gold dredge went up there! :chuckle:
-
Yeah pretty impressive runs. If you look close you can see there is another hut high on the bank.
-
Looks like some nice runs to set a swim thru traps in. Better get your skinning knives sharp.
-
Hmmm..... I'd bet there's some mink there too!
-
Is it Nov 1st yet?
-
Were getting there day by day! Have to make it through elk season first! :chuckle:
-
Picked up a couple muskrat colony traps, got some more metal tags for the traps and bought a few other odds and ends....looking forward to this year. Gonna try to get a couple pelts...maybe something other than skunks and possums... :chuckle: :dunno:
ALthough, i gotta say, I like skunks, they are cool animals...if they didnt stink so bad.

You buy those colony traps or build them? Very easy build and work really good. I just picked up another 14 7x7x24 inch Duke single doors. I am going to try and catch a couple of Marten this year and then focus on Mink and Muskrats after the snow runs me out of Marten country.
-
Very impressive!
I love that your daughter is involved, pass on the heritage.

I bought them. It was like 12 bucks for two of them. I didnt really have the time to screw with it and 12 bucks is nothin, so I figured I would support a trapping company. ;)
They do look very easy to make, but I have enough on the plate at the moment. Good luck with the Martens!

I beg to differ with you. $12 isn't nothing. It's one muskrat!

I'm getting excited but I still need to get a dozen cat traps built before december. :bash:

So what are you going to be setting for on Nov.1? My god, it's elk season!
-
Rats and beaver on private land.
-
I'm hitting the rats hard (private property) for the opening weekend. I need bait for the Marten line.
My buddy and I are leaving on the 4th (after Elk closes) for a 12 day Marten/Bobcat/Weasel trip.
22 days and a wake-up!
What about you Bruce?
Doug

some good spot for some connibers right there, oh wait we cant use them, has anyone come up with a sure fire swimm through live trap yet? i have been out of the game since we lost body gripping traps.
-
Well if there is room for the swimthrough to be set up properly and fully submerged, it should be "surefire" set. Really not even conibears are a certain deal.
-
There are a ton of great swim through designs that are consistently catching beaver. Most of the trappers I know are building their own. Both gravity and power door style swim throughs and doing very well with them.
-
Ist elk, it's unAmerican not to go elk hunting. :chuckle:
2nd Late buck depending on how things go the next couple weeks.
Then around about Thanksgiving I think I'll put out some cat sets and maybe some beaver and otter. I have an area I can only access early so I have to get with it if I'm going to trap it. Otherwise I would probably wait 'till December.
If I had any rats I would be after them as early as I could get away, mink too. Not to be though.
I've kind of got bobcats on the brain this year so we'll see how that works out. Locked gates every where I look so that's a bad omen.
-
Good Luck with that elk, Bruce. 21 days!!!!! :chuckle:
-
Countdown to 20 days.
-
Gained access to some more prime muskrat areas on private property today. Didn't help with containing the excitement of waiting another three weeks for the opener.
On a sad note my Marten trip is on life support and I may miss my opportunity to go all together because of work schedule.
-
I have found that work often interferes with trapping. That is one reason I changed to a different delivery route, same amount of takehome and 3 hrs a day more to trap and process fur.
It will happen one day, just be sure all your ducks are in a row when the opportunity arrives.
Almost forgot 19 days left...
-
Work sure does foul things up. :chuckle:
Retired tramp logger here. I used to quit my job when deer season started and go back to work after trapping season. :IBCOOL:
-
Eight more years and that "W" word will be a distant memory. Hunting, Fishing and Trapping full time, all the time!
-
:chuckle: 8) 13 days....
-
12 more days to go!
The stretchers are cleaned and hung, colony traps are repaired and the skinning knives a sharpened!
