Title: GPS Mapping Help
Post by: jrebel on July 28, 2013, 05:26:04 PM
I just purchased a garmin 62sc and the HUNTWA chip to go in it.  So far I am happy with it, but now I need to find a compatible topo map for my PC.  Is it possible to have the HUNTWA Map on my PC without downloading it for the a cost?  If not what is another map I can use / download that has topo?

Thanks

Johnny

The following link starts Gmap4 and displays an online high resolution topo map centered on East Wenatchee.

http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=47.416996,-120.288792&t=t4&z=14 (http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=47.416996,-120.288792&t=t4&z=14)

You can display your GPX files on the map.
You can click the map and save your work as a GPX file.  Menu ==> Draw and save.

Here is a Gmap4 thread:

But I don't think the HuntWA data can be displayed by Gmap4.

When I do this, it works....but as soon as I disconnect my gps or remove my chip everything is gone.  I would love to just open it on the computer and so I can study hunting areas without having my gps attached.

Maybe I am missing something?? :dunno:

Tagging along, I just had a Garmin 62sc for awhile but no map.  Just bought the downloadable huntinggps Washington map day before yesterday and loaded it onto my computer and handheld.  Everything went pretty smooth.  No topo with the map though.

That is weird....I  bought a chip and it has 24K topo on it.  Now I just need to figure out how to keep it on the computer.   :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:  Anyone...Anyone????

Did you load Base camp?
I believe you can upload the map from your GPS into Base Camp. I use it to mark future hunting locations, then upload to my GPS.

Actually I take that back, it does have topo with it.

Yes, I have base camp and it will show the topo when I have my gps hooked to my computer.  As soon as I disconnect my gps the topo goes away.  I am not the most tech savy person on here so I am probably just missing something.

I do not believe you can permanently upload the maps from the chip to a PC. You need the download version for that.

That's what I was afraid of....that will cost another $100.  :bash: :bash:

The SD card can only be viewed when connected to your computer.  This way we can lock the map so it can't be duplicated.  We are relying on Garmin's software and delivery system so we have to follow their rules and protect ourselves as well.  We do offer a computer only download for Basecamp priced at $50 dollars.  SD card  can be viewed in any computer or GPS but the card must be plugged into it.  Download can be downloaded to unlimited computers but only unlocked for 1 GPS with the initial purchase.  Additional unlocks can be purchased at discount through your account.

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks for the response....I will have to buy the $50 version to overlay my basecamp.  I assume I can then hook up my gps and transfer my data to that map?????

Thanks

One more question???  If I down load this to my laptop is it transferrable to my desktop or do I have to buy it twice?

When trying to unlock the map on basemap it requires a "product key / coupon code"  Where do I find this code?

Thanks

Here is a 4 part video by huntinggps that I watched and then would pause and do it and then watch some more and would pause and do it to download and install the map.  It sounds like you may be able to click on part 3 of the video at the top to skip ahead to where you are in the process.  It helped me out a lot.

Not sure if anyone's said it yet, but I don't really feel like reading anything. I'm kinda exhausted.

It is probably too late but you can purchase the download to PC, instead of buying the SD card - That way you can download it and have it on any PC, and It allows you to be able to place it on to an SD card also, Really its a better deal for the money. That way you can pre-plan on PC then just download your trails/trip onto the SD card and good to go.

With your GPS still hooked up is it possible to export the file or a screen shot as a TIFF or JPEG? Then you can either print that or view it after you disconnect? Just a thought.

I wanted the chip so I didn't have to worry about downloading specific maps to my gps.  I often will travel great distances in a hunting trip, often without prior planning.  I didn't want the hassle of having to preplan everything and download maps.
