Title: Chelan bank/dock fishing tips?
Post by: Fl0und3rz on July 30, 2013, 08:26:04 AM
I will be in Chelan soon with my two nephews (9 and 10) and my 17 month old boy.  I have not fished it before, and I am wondering if there are any tips or techniques that will make this an enjoyable outing for the little guys.

I will have to read the regs also to see what the rules are regarding gear, species, and/or retention, but any tips regarding locations, rigs, depths, bait, etc., is much appreciated.

I have most of the basics covered as far as gear (casting, bottom, and bobber type fishing tackle), but I can pick up a few things if necessary, too.

Thanks.

There are a couple of top-notch guide services on the lake specializing in mackinaw/lake trout - would be a good opportunity for your nephews and you to catch a good number of good-sized fish.  Need a boat and downriggers to fish for them.  Shore fishing, your best bets are standard trout gear and techniques.  If you have a small boat, Roses Lake is a better bet for catching trout, and Antilon can be pretty decent shore fishing for browns.  At both smaller lakes, bank access is very limited, but a little exists.

What part of the lake will you be fishing from?  Casting roostertails around the docks in town is always fun and good for a squawfish every 5th cast or so... I've seen people catching planter trout from the docks at the state park while soaking bait under a bobber, casting cranks for the occaisional smallmouth, etc.  Water is so clear you can often watch fish in 30' of water take your bait.

If you could swing it at all, though, I'd see if you could take the nephews out on one of the guide boats for a half-day trip.  About as close to "guaranteed fish" as you'll ever get.

Thanks guys.  Keep 'em coming. We will be staying near the southeast end of the lake, near or in Chelan proper (near the Red Apple Market).  Walking or short driving distance is probably preferred, unless I hear differently.

I don't know if a guide service is in the cards, but throw up some recommendations anyway.  I don't think lunkers are necessary, but I'll talk to the FIL about a half-day guide trip or something.

The FIL is out of Prince of Wales AK, and has bartered AK hunting trips before, so that might be an option as well for any guide recommendations.  I'll talk to him and see what he has planned.

The FIL might have/bring an inflatable raft, but trolling in that would be out.

Also, anyone know the regs on license requirement on fishing with a child (10 years old and below), if you are not the one "fishing," but only helping. (Again, I still need to read, but if anyone knows, help would be great.  I'll mostly be looking after my 17 month old and helping.)

Thanks again.

When we were kids we would put a chunk of cheddar cheese on a hook and drop it to the bottom at the end of a dock and would catch the bottom fish all day long. Nothing we would eat but it was entertaining.
