My wife was driving in Oak Harbor yesterday and snapped this pic of an albino deer. It is the first i have ever seen... it is small at the time... but when and if it makes it and gets bigger would it be ok to kill and eat? i have never had to deal with this.
-
Would be fine to kill and eat, bad juju though.
-
It used to be illegal to take an albino in this state....not anymore.
Legal now to harvest.

Why the bad juju?

Spirit Deer. Natives have some weird beliefs about them, don't really know what exactly.
I would never kill one personally.
The white colour deer or stag has long been associated with purity; and in Celtic culture, the colour also represented the otherworld.[2] In modern society, people have acted to protect the white stag as a vestige of beauty, and the hunting of the white stag has often met with anger, because of its rare and elusive nature.[6]
Guess that don't really mean much to some people. I just believe in Karma and other unworldly natures that us as humans still don't understand. Id let him walk for sure
To each they're own though.

Good points.....
I look at it like a color phase bear or irregular antler or similar....just a variation from the norm.....
-
SORRY..big old monster buck...whack!
-
yeah i dunno... i would love to take it if it was a buck... espically if it got big would be an awesome mount... but still i dunno if i could do it b/c of the rareity... and b/c i am Irish... i dunno... but if it taste the same i might have to :)
-
I would take it if legal. Would love that hide or mount if buck. Pretty awesome. Just a genetic anomaly...
-
i think i would mount regarless buck or doe b/c of the rarity.... anyone else have pictures of this?
-
They are bad genes that none of us want to be passed on, Including WDFW. I wouldn't have a problem culling it out of the herd.
-
:yeah:it's a defect. Cull it. Figures these groups are worshiping defective animals
-
how is it defective.
-
It is from defective genes, this is a pretty good article about it and includes some cool pictures:

I lived on whidbey island (south end) until 2004. For a while there was an albino buck roaming around! Pretty cool to watch!
-
DO NOT SHOOT THE SPIRIT DEER!!!! :chuckle:
-
I would let her or him walk even if it was legal. Such a rare sight. Wait f that... :hunter: Only because I can and it's legal.. lol
Nope I would pass on her/him. Seriously I would.
-
I would also let this deer walk. Personal choice. There's a young buck near where I live that is white. He lives most of the time on private land. Hope he survived the season. Cool to see a white one on the hoof...
-
Most of the time they dont live to see full maturity. They are a walking beacon for predators. Unless of course there is four feet of snow on the ground. :chuckle:
-
their all white meat :chuckle: :chuckle:

SORRY..big old monster buck...whack!
:yeah:
I've seen a few of them roaming the island but all have been freeland and south. Definitely very cool to see!
-
i couldn't shoot that deer fast enough! WAY more rare than a 200" buck! :mgun2: what a trophy!

There was a big 4 point that was hit by a car just south of deception pass park in 1996. Completely white (i don't know if it was albino). The wdfw took the buck, thought they were going to mount it but :dunno: .
