I'm considering building a few floating muskrat traps this year and was wondering if anyone had any tips as far as bait and lures goes?

Never one to use bait, lure can be anything that's smells good to rats. Mint oil is a favorite of mine, mixed w petroleum jelly, about an ounce of oil mixed with 4 ounces of petroleum jelly is about the correct ratio. Just melt the PJ in a jar in a pan of water add oil stir let cool. Lots of commercial rat lures out there also.

Thanks bob I will have to give that a shot.

When i was about 10 i got 4 old leg hold traps. I lives on a creek with a bunch of muskrats, i lived down there trapping those things for a few years. All i ever used was a slice of apple on the pan, and i caught a ton!

Mint flavored tooth paste= ready made lure
Bait, carrots, apples, parsnips

I've heard that also. Think about it, it's waterproof, stay put, strong odor, don't know if it freezes or not.
