Title: Hello Turkey hunters!
Post by: jblackburn on August 04, 2013, 10:25:23 AM
I posted in the new member section, but I wanted to say HI in the forum that I will probably spent the most time! I am originally from Missouri, but moved to Pullman from Oklahoma. I am completely ate up with spring turkey hunting, so I am excited to be in a state with three subspecies!

Here are a few pics from this year.

Lol, thanks, but I don't have pictures of all the times I got my butt kicked this past year!  I hunted back home in Missouri this year, missed twice and screwed up a few more times, then I chased Merriams in Colorado this year and never saw a gobbler!  These birds were all from Kansas and Oklahoma.

Welcome! Nice birds and pics! I like those fan mounts with the shell used to harvest the bird, nice touch! You moved to Rio country in our state, my personal favorite. I think you'll enjoy turkey hunting in Washington.

Welcome to the site ... as a old Coug graduate, "Go Cougs" !

We also have an early fall and late fall season.   Roughly 2/3 to 3/4 of the state's turkey harvest occurs in the NE corner of the state with Colville being the "Turkey Capital of Washington", and Merriams are also down the eastern slopes of the Cascades ... North Lincoln County and SE Washington has the Rios .... the Easterns are found in Western Washington primarily south of Puget Sound ... NW Washington has a few Easterns but not many.

Welcome to the state and this site ....

Thanks for all the welcomes and the info!

I should have my resident status in mid-October so I am looking at going on a late fall hunt.  I have fall hunted a few times, but without much success.  I know the theory of busting up a flock and calling them back, but I've never had much luck.  Finding them in the fall has always been the toughest thing for me to do.

Oh, and Go Cougs!  Especially since they are paying the bills now! :)

If you make it out on a late fall hunt consider patterning the birds and then setting up on their travel routes. Depending on snow and food they will likely be in large wintering flocks then and can be easily patterned between roosting and feeding sites. Good luck out there! Don't overlook the upland bird prospects, the Palouse is one of the last pheasant strongholds in our state.

My fall birds here have always been using an ambush.  Sometime I'd like to try the flock split and kee kee routine.  Good luck.

Welcome to the site and to WSU.  You've landed in a fantastic region for turkey hunting (and most all hunting, for that matter).  I live in Pullman as well and have hunted birds all over the state.  Shoot me a PM and we can grab a beer downtown and talk turkey.  I'm always interested in meeting people that share the same affliction.
