Practice setting up while standing on the ground at least a dozen times. Then climb up 3 ft and practice some more.
Always where a safety belt and climbing harness when climbing setting up stepping into and getting out of stand.
Just find an area and be aware of wind currents all times of day in area when you set up and hunt.

My tip would be not to do it. Whitetail yes elk no.

All the tips you read about hunting whitetails out of stands apply to elk, also (scent control, wind, ingress, egress, safety, movement, time, noise, etc.). Just gear your site selection toward recently used water sources. Use mornings and midday to find the most active water sources; if you find a better place, then move the stand there. Never hunt against the wind; if the wind isn't right for that setup, then don't try to hunt it: hunt a different stand that will work for that wind. Get into your stand at 3pm and don't get out until legal shooting time ends.
Don't give up; they will be there at least once in a season's worth of sitting; then you'll have a close shot at a relaxed animal that has no clue you are there.

Do not listen to the above advice. :bash: Elk hunting is very productive out of a tree stand. Find a "hub" where several trails meet and set up there.

Ssshhhhhhhhh :chuckle:
Saddles are typically productive areas for tree stands if the wind is right when you hunt. Hang multiple stands based on prevailing wind currents.

Stands over wallows !

Yeah ...They work just fine :chuckle: Plus my hunting buddy has killed 3 elk in the last 3 years from his tree stand which is set up in a swampy area ...

Place a backpack full of translucent apples under the stand every other day.
The cows will use it and the bulls will follow.

This will be my 2nd year going after elk in a tree stand. I'm actually heading up this weekend to put another one up.

Thanks for all the tips.I will post pics if i kill one out of my set up this year

Like to sit up on well used trails. When all those hunters on the ground spot and stocking they push them right past me.

In the right spot it works great. I've killed 4 from a stand.

About ten years ago I thought up a great idea to sit in a treestand during the blacktail rut in an area that I knew had big bucks. My dad was off about 500 yards to my right trying to push some deer my way and ended up jumping a buck. He took a shot but missed clear as day, but in doing so jumped a herd of elk that was bedded between me and him. They just single filed right to me and literally went directly below the tree I was in. I could of jumped out and landed on any of them. The last one was a decent 5x5. Was one of the neatest experiences of my hunting career. It would of been very easy to take any of those elk with a gun or a bow. Point is, I don't see why using a treestand would be any different with elk than it would be with deer. Go for it

Last year I was in a tree stand and got held hostage. The elk had been coming into my stand to lick the salt lick for a long time. My stand was in prime shooting location. But for some reason the elk came in a different way and I was stuck. I wish I would of been on the ground.
