So I've got a bone stock, blued 12 gauge 870 Express pump that I use for birds and clays and whatnot. It came with the 28" barrel. I was out at the bar with a buddy who had a 18.5" barrel for an 870 that he never used and gave it to me for picking up the bar tab.
My question is: Is there any reason I shouldn't swap them back and forth? Do shotgun barrels "burn in" like other mechanical components?

Very easily replaced, no problem at all.

Unscrew the knurled knob counterclockwise. Pull barrel off. Insert new barrel. Screw knob clockwise until tight.

there are standard 870 barrels and light contour barrels, I do not 'think' they interchange.

I put a standard 18.5" barrel on my light contour 870, no problems.

The new barrel fits just fine. I was just wondering if there is any disadvantage to swapping back and forth that I haven’t considered. For example, if the receiver or whatever gets broken in with one barrel, if it won’t run as well with another one, especially if I switch back to the original one regularly.

shouldn't be a problem.
the only interchange issue with the 870 is that "special field" barrels won't work with standard receivers(the barrel lug is in a different spot) and 20 gauge lightweight barrels won't interchange with standard 20 gauge receivers(the old ones that were built on 12ga frames).

:) :) as far as I know no problem with receivers, BUT, I do KNOW all 870 barrels of the same gauge are not interchangable, I do not know if it is standard, light contour, express or SPS. Also putting a 3 inch, or 3.5 inch, barrel on a 2.75 inch receiver does not make a 3 inch gun.
CarlRemington® 870 Replacement Shotgun Barrels
"Model 870 Barrels with 3" chambers will fit both magnum and 2-3/4" receivers and will handle both 2-3/4" and 3" shells with a magnum receiver. (An M at the end of the serial number = magnum receiver.) Use only 2-3/4" shells when barrels are used on 2-3/4" receivers. 870 Special Field barrels and other model 870 barrels are not interchangeable. The 20-ga. lightweight barrels will not fit 20-ga. standard guns. Light contour barrels for the 870 Wingmaster have a weight reduction of more than a 1/2 lb. to improve balance, portability and handling without sacrificing strength or durability. The Model 870 Super Slug with Scope is 23" long with a 3" chamber capable of handling 2-3/4" or 3" sabot slugs. Mounted and boresighted 2-7x32 scope. Fits 870 Wingmaster, Special Purpose and Express models. Text Size: AAA
