Title: FS fire pit
Post by: erk444 on August 09, 2013, 10:30:41 PM
Hi all :hello: I have been making a few fire pits to make a little money for hunting season. They are 35'' from corner to corner, 32''across the flats, and 12'' high. Made from 1/4'' steel. They weigh around 100#. I sell them for $150. I can also do custom cutouts like names and logos depending on detail. I'm in Bonney Lake and willing to travel a little if necessary. Thanks for looking!

Just bumping it up to say that the one pictured at the beginning of this thread is sold. Also adding a pic of the cutouts I have available. I'm always adding more, so I'll try to update every so often.

Just a quick update to add a couple recent pics of the cutouts I have and to say that Im going to 1/4'' thick steel instead of 5/16''. I ran out of scrap so I gotta start buying my own steel. The pits will be a little lighter, and I wont have to raise my prices cause the thinner steel is cheaper. Ill still make money, just not as much as before :tung:. Thanks to all who have shown intrest, and thanks for all the nice remarks

Hey everyone wanted to bump this back up. Just had erk444 make me a fire pit. Let me tell you what, I can't wait to pick it up!!! He played with the design and matched my logo very well and I think it looks great. If you are thinking about buying one, do it! and don't be afraid to give him a custom to work on.

Oh and this one is 6" tall then the standard one he sells. I had him add the extra to let me set in in concrete.

Title: Re: FS fire pit
Post by: erk444 on October 10, 2013, 10:16:11 AM
We just gotta come up with a good spot to meet or maybe find someone whos going over. Im willing to travel a bit. It takes $100 to fill my tank, so if I have to go to far Im not making alot :chuckle: Where are you at?
Title: Re: FS fire pit
Post by: 92xj on October 10, 2013, 10:33:01 AM
I'm in the Tri-Cities and could meet in Yakima.
I might be interested in 2 of them.  But I am sure there are a few more East siders that might also want one.
Maybe you could do an east side sale and get 10 or so sold to head over all together. Not sure how to work all that out.
Just a thought.

Post by: erk444 on October 11, 2013, 03:46:33 PM
Yakima is bit far, but if that's our only option, then I'm in. Good idea about getting a few made and doing it all at once though. I'm sure if we reached out to another member who may be going over, we could get some to the eastsiders. If nothing else though, I would definitely meet ya in Yakima. Let me know

Well last week, i picked up two pits that Erk put together for me. Both were gifts for a couple close farmer friends near Spokane. i had ideas of having cattle brands, family names, steelhead, cattle and even wheat cut outs for the pits. i also asked Erk, to replicate images i sent him, from a  glass mural at one of my friends homes. Erk text me pictures of what he could do, and i would pick the ones i wanted, and in the end, he text me the the layout, of all the cut outs he would be doing  for my approval. I liked them alot, and said go for it.  Four days later i get a picture of both completed pits, and was excited. I met Erk a few hours later, and these pits, by far,  exceeded my expectations. They were absolutely amazing. Erk is a true artist.  I just got back from delivering them,  and all,  that got to see them were as well,  amazed,  and inquired how to get a pit as well.   I'm so very happy i stumbled upon this opportunity.  Thank you Erk, your a true craftsman.  I will be posting a few pictures soon....Thanks again.

Well i can post pictures now of the beautiful pits "erk" Eric, put together for me. The pictures don't do them justice. mine were bad so had to poach a couple you sent to me, Erk. i sent Erk pictures of brands, and even a mural and he was able to replicate them all. gave two pits to some cattle partners of mine. they are awesome. Erk, I'll be going to the Spokane area sometime in mid February, and would be happy to meet anybody for delivery if they are interested. Thanks again.

I would like one!! Can you make one like carpsniperg  that is 6in taller than your standard ? The wife says she would like trees and bears on it. Do you have any wolf or coyotes that you can do also? It is going in cement so we wouldn't want any cutouts near the bottom.  Thanks, let me know.     Mike

Erk444 what kind of steel are these made out of?  I was wondering about the rust factor.  And what are the dimensions of the pits?

Tthey are made out of regular mild steel, so they will rust. Some guys paint theirs with high heat paint, but I've heard they have to paint once a year or so. I make them thick so they'll last a long time . They measure 35'' from corner to corner, and 32'' across the flats.

Erk  I took some pictures but havent gotten them to up load yet.  I just had to get on here and say I am so happy with my fire pit.  I got a quart of Rustoleum high heat BBQ paint at Ace Hardware for 20.00 and put 4 brushed on coats on it over several days and I think it will bake on really well. It should be an easy touch up later with the other 1/2-2/3  of the can.  I gave you a couple of designs I wanted as well as my name and you captured them exactly as you had emailed me. They look even better in the steel.  You have each panel proportioned very well and like I said I couldnt be happier. You got talent man.  I smile every time I look at it. Thanks  Johnny B

Title: Re: FS fire pit
Post by: erk444 on May 15, 2014, 05:26:16 PM
Bronczilla, I think I can work with those ford designs. Ill have to mess around with them and see what I can come up with.
Spuddieselwwu, I just do these pits on the side so I try to keep them simple. I haven't done a propane one before. I know it could be done, but its just a little more than I wanna do right now.
Irishevox, there is a pic on the thread of the different designs I have, but I do a lot of different things as well. As long as its a basic silhouette or a pic without to much detail, I can usually draw it up. It just costs a little more for the time I have to put in.
Thanks for the interest

Yep, one per side. Or 2 if theres not a lot of detail. My plasma had a hard time if the image is too small. I can make mothers/fathers day I'm pretty sure.

Right on.  You have a paypal?  Want a deposit before you start?  PM me info if you want.
No pay pal, just pay me when we meet to pick it up!

Erk444   I'm using mine today and really enjoy it each time I use/look at it.   The Derusto brush on paint is holding up well.  It may need a touch up with a spray can on some of the edges this summer though.  Thanks again for your awesome work.  JB
Thats awesome John! Thanks

Well the brother in law wasn't able to pick it up before his vacation, so I'll either have to have someone else pick it up, wait till he gets back in 2 weeks or pick it up Mother's Day weekend when I'll be over that way. Let me know what works for you

Here is a couple with a bottom and legs. Not sure on the weight, but it'll probly be around 120# to 150# I think? Its $300 for one with the bottom and legs and $150 for one without. Its an extra $50 if I have to draw up a custom logo or brand etc.

My advice.....buy yourself or family one of these.  You won't regret it.

I had one of these made for our cabin and gave it to my wife for xmas.  It turned out awesome.  I had Eric make it 48" in diameter, which cost more but it was a huge hit with our guests this weekend at the cabin.  You could fit 8 people around it easily.  I will get some better photos of it this next weekend and post them up.  This summer we are going to build a pad for it to rest on permanently.

I picked the cutouts and their location, Eric sized them to fit each side and it turned out really nice.  I painted mine black with stove paint.

Hey BetoBow, if you go back to page 8 and scroll down a bit, you can see the most recent pic of my cutouts. My home computer screwed up and I lost the program that I draw them up on. I still have it at work so its no problem though. If you PM me your cell #, I can text a pic too. Theres alot of images that I've done that aren't in that pic, but you can see most if them if you scroll through the different pages of this thread. Thanks for the interest!

That's what I loved also.  I am pretty particular about how I want things.  I told him what and where I wanted each cutout.  I told him my plans for install so he could hold the cutouts high enough to clear my base and he sized them to fit perfectly.  He sent a template of what it was going to look like for me to approve before he did the cutting and it was spot on, no corrections or modifications were needed.

Great guy to deal with.  Highly recommend these and him to anyone looking for a fire ring.

Here is a larger one he made for me. Price jumped quite a bit because the metal yield from stock sheet was terrible but I really like the larger version.  This pic was taken about an hour ago.

Go for it man! It takes exactly 11 of those bricks for the outer ring. Then I bought 6 smaller square bricks probably 10 inches long 6 inches wide and 3 inches thick. Stacked them up 2 high on their sides to put the ring on. So it was nice and level/sturdy. Then filled it with rock. I got the idea from an earlier post but filled mine with rock so you couldn't tell it was resting on bricks.

@erk444 I see your original size is 8 sided, have you expanded on your size yet?

My last daughter is getting married next October, and need one double that size, so like 16 panels instead of eight, and I'll probably only want eight images on it some of which you are going to have to draw up, like  US Navy, Masterchiefs anchor, family name. Can you do this, plus what do you think cost will be?
Title: Re: FS fire pit
Post by: erk444 on October 01, 2017, 08:36:44 AM
I can make it bigger and still keep it with eight sides. I think that would be best if you still only want eight images. My regular pits are 32 inch from side to side but Ive made them up to 4 feet before so its not a problem. The cost jumps a bit though cause of the amount of material used. Im not sure what the Masterchiefs anchor looks like but I can probly draw somthing up if it dont have to much detail. Ill let you know a price after we figure out the size and images. That work for you?
Title: Re: FS fire pit
Post by: Rainier10 on October 01, 2017, 08:49:43 AM
Erk did a larger one for me. I think it was about 48" across, just larger panels but still 8 panels. I had him make it a few inches taller than normal also. He then sized the cutouts to be proportionate to the larger panel size. It looks awesome works great for our larger groups.

Well my current put is 42”, we are wanting to get out to 60”, and yes eight panels is fine.

Pic enclosed, it’s a lot of detail, but it doesn’t have to be exactly like the picture.

One of the best pits around if anyone is thinking of getting one. We have a total of 7 and ours are in a commercial setting. They get used everyday during the summer. We have had ours for several years.

My brother has a nice 20acre property next to pond that we go hang out on for summer nights with a fire. He’s getting married this year and I think this would be a cool present. He proposed to his fiancé there as the were planing trees.  What’s the additional rate to put a name and date on a side to symbolize their wedding?

Thanks Erk! You couldn't have made that any easier.  You had it ready to go in less than 1-week and even met me at a convenient location.  5-star customer service!

I finally finished my gravel project yesterday and we lit our first fire in the pit.

For anyone thinking about getting one of these, I highly recommend it.  We are a hockey family, so Erk even made a custom pattern from a picture I sent him.  I let my wife and kids pick sides, so we all have some "ownership".

It’s just nice to move it around, the cheap ones seem to lose their wheels pretty fast. I could always just pick it up and move around without wheels but they are pretty convenient.  I would expect the cost would go up a bit, it would need some heavy duty wheels to support the weight of the metal.

Would you want it to be on the cart permanently? If so, I would worry about the heat affecting the wheels. I would think the cart would haft be separate??

hmm, not a bad idea to have them separate. The ones on my pit now are attached permanently and they haven’t melted yet, I put sand or dirt in the pit first.

You could just tip on edge and use a dolly, but it would be more fun to design some wheels  :)
I am pouring a patio soon and am trying to figure out how one of these will fit into the layout!  has anyone used a gas flame with these?

What’s happens to the lava rock when you clean out the ashes?🤔

I’ve only had one fire so far.   I can say the wood burned extremely well leaving only white ash and a couple of small chunks of wood unburned.

Looks identical to my setup. Yard even looks like mine  :chuckle: Looks great. We sprayed high temp black bbq paint on ours tho. Without it it seemed like it would rust more. Catches the eye quicker as well. Kinda pops out at you entering the yard.

picked up the pit that Machias ordered this afternoon and will take it to him in a couple weeks when I go over to Idaho bear hunting with him.  Just saying that if you are interested in buying a pit from Eric you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't get one.  They are awesome.  was really impressed with the quality of the work he does.  Was really jealous when I picked it up from him that I haven't ordered one yet.  Gonna cost me $450 cuz now the wife wants one and wants to get 2 for our kids for Christmas. IMHO they are more than worth it. Really nice designs and he worked with me by meeting me after work to pick it up.  Thanks Eric and am looking forward to getting some of those nice pits for my family.  Taking some liberties by posting a pic of the pit he made for Machias.  Nice looking scene of hounds treeing a bear.  A little hi heat black paint will cover the letters on the steel.  Other side cut outs on this one are caribou, bear outline, bear paw, moose

Absolutely love mine. I went with the oversized model for my cabin. You can easily get 8-10 people around it. Erik was super easy to work with and got the fire ring in a really quick timeframe. Really happy with the product and the service.

48” across. 42” would have worked most of the time. 48” is perfect when we have larger groups. Mine is also a little taller as well. I can’t remember that dimension but can measure it this weekend.

maybe a detachable system, or 10” legs?  I always put a layer of sand or dirt on the bottom of my fire pits, that should help with heat displacement towards the tires?  Thanks for considering this.

6 foot is a little bigger than I'm willing to do. I'm limited on my material and that would use up to much. I've decided 4 foot is the biggest I can make. Sorry man.

How about the wheel around one???     Any progress with that idea?  And wheels on an axle that simple come off so the fire doesn't melt would work.

So I just built one that has wheels. They are metal wheels that a guy ordered himself. Im going to wait and see how it works before I build another just in case it needs to be modified. I'll let you know how it works out trophyhunt. It has 3 legs like the normal pits with a bottom, but 2 of the legs are shorter with bolt pads that match the wheels. i made 2 handles that slide over the edge of the pit and bind when you pick it up. then you just push it around like a wheel barrow. At least thats the theory anyway.

Curious has anyone ever used a Gas flame in one of these?  Thinking it would be cool with Gas on the concrete patio where I don't want to have a big mess.  Then can take it out to camp or in the yard when I want a wood fire.

Another satisfied customer... Haven't even started a fire yet  :chuckle:
Super happy the way it turned out and Eric was very accommodating... I was set on a pit with wheels because I don't want any stains on the concrete. My wife designed some of the pictures, we went oversize and most importantly... she likes it.  :)

I now have a finished patio area so time to get serious.  :IBCOOL:

How much do the standard size pits weigh with a bottom and legs?  and how tall are the sides of the pit.
Been scrolling through older posts looking at the cutouts, so many good options to choose from.

So Ive never wieghed one with a bottom and legs, but its well over 100#s. Sides are 11.5" unless you want it taller.

Looking forward to meeting up tomorrow! When I painted one with the bottom and legs like yours, I used 3 cans. 2 heavy coats on the outside, and one light one on the inside.

I've sold a ton! Especially last year during covid. It sucks that material prices went so high. I just can't justify raising my prices so much since it's just a side gig. Met a ton of cool people and made some money!

Ok fellas I'm bumping this to the top because a good friend of mine is able to build more pits! I have nothing to do with them anymore but I've had quite a few people reach out to me that are interested in one. He does all the work and pricing so if anyone is looking for a pit I'll put his email here. His name is Ray and his email is:
