Title: Maceration Question
Post by: Kanooper on October 22, 2008, 10:30:38 PM
So I am in the process of doing a mule deer european mount and I am doing the maceration process on the skull to clean it.  My question is about water level.  Does it matter if the base of the antlers are submerged in the water?  I only have about an inch of the bases submerged, but I didn't know if that would discolor the antlers or something.  I have an aquarium heater in the water and my water temp is around 80 degrees.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I use this method on all my skulls.  Though I have not yet noticed any discoloration of the antler burs I would stll recomend keeping them out as much as possible.  Ya never know when it will happen.

So you know the nose bones will probably fall out.  Just dry the skull slide them back into place with a touch of super glue.  I also wrap a strip of paper towel around the nose with some electric tape to keep the seam together durring the drying process.
