Title: 264 Mag Reloading
Post by: dewandgin on August 12, 2013, 07:00:51 PM
Okay so I won this gun at the RMEF banquet this year and put a little Redfield 3x9 on it. Picked up a couple of boxes of ammo from Len and took this out shooting this weekend. Got it zeroed in and it is a pretty fun little gun. So now I have 30+ empty brass and am going to start reloading some and was looking at the 6.5 mm Nosler 140gr accubonds (thanks for the link BiggerHammer) and was wondering if anybody has used them before and how they work out? I will be either using the 4831 or 4350 powder.

Have always loaded 140 Hornadies. They have a unique double ogive which allows you to seat the bullet close to the lands, yet won't intrude on powder space. Sierras and Noslers typically need to be seated too deep to stay off the lands in most rifles, thus, hindering powder capacity. They have alway proven accurate and capable in the half dozen or so 264's owned since the 70's.

You also might want to try H1000. The 264 needs a really slow powder. The H4350 I'm not sure I'd try it at all. I used to use H450 with 140 grain Nosler Partitions, but they don't make that powder anymore. I really think you'd do we'll with the H1000.

Had great success with the 4831,  excellent  groups . 4350 wasn't slow burning enough and grouping was not acceptable.   Make sure you watch the bullet seating depth.  My 264 is picky about how far the bullet is from the lands.  Finding the right coal was also a big help in getting an accurate load.

Hornady's Secant ogive.

H4350 is a excellent accurate powder in the .264 Winnie with the 140 AB's. I found it more accurate in the Rem700 I had than the 4831. You will get similar velocities with both powders. I no longer have a .264 Winnie, it was traded for a 7mm Ultra.

I'll add to the heap of folks saying slower powder is better. Stay away from 4350 with 140 grainers. I use IMR 4831 or 7828 personally.
