Title: Wader reviews wanted.
Post by: syoungs on August 20, 2013, 07:39:21 PM

Hi all,
Im in the market for a new set of waders before this season, ive been using a set of hodgemans for the past 4 years, and they are still working fine, but I bought the boot in size 13, and I need a 14, I also would like to step up a bit in insulation to 1000-1200g.

I need a stout size at the least, I was set on buying cabelas ultimate big man waders, but had some issues with cabelas this past weekend, and am no going to look further into other brands.

Does anyone have any recomendations for waders that come in larger sizes? im looing to keep the expense down under 250 if possible.

Cabelas magnum series I believe.  Check them out. I just purchased some new 3.5 mil with boot bottoms tonight.  They had them for $119 reg $199 I believe. Or somewhere in the ball park.  I usually replace them every year as they get thrashed during duck season.

Being from a BIG guy family... myself being 6' 10"...   I feel your pain.
I wouldn't recomend any of the waders that utilize velcro for the shoulder straps. It sucks when they attract sticks and burs. Plus, being a bigger guy, the velcro comes undone frequently on me.

I purchased a pair of the BIG MAN waders in "Stout"... yeah... those where WAY too big.
They are made for a guy with a 60" waist. I'm a pretty big guy, but even I have to criss cross the shoulder straps to get them to fit better. I can wear my layers, and jacket, AND a life vest under the waders. Thats how big around they are.

I have a size 16 boot... but find most all of the cabelas brands run large in the boot. A 15 fits me great on waders.

These are the ones I have now.... http://www.cabelas.com/product/Footwear/Mens-Footwear/Mens-Waders/Hunting-Waders%7C/pc/104797980/c/104747580/sc/104674680/i/103895280/Cabelas-Ultimate-Hunting-Chest-Waders-150-Stout/749354.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2F_%2FN-1101198%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BRCcat104791680&WTz_l=SBC%3BRCcat104791680%3Bcat103895280 (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Footwear/Mens-Footwear/Mens-Waders/Hunting-Waders%7C/pc/104797980/c/104747580/sc/104674680/i/103895280/Cabelas-Ultimate-Hunting-Chest-Waders-150-Stout/749354.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2F_%2FN-1101198%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BRCcat104791680&WTz_l=SBC%3BRCcat104791680%3Bcat103895280)
They are very comfortable and keep me really warm, but they have velcro. Otherwise they are great waders. The Neopreme on them holds up great. The crotch is still intact, and I've gone through tons of beaver chopped trees to say the hold up well to being poked.

But I think you would like these better.....

These are what my Father has. He loves 'em.

Just my 2 cents.

Cabelas has a great return pollicy. Just ship want you want to the store... that way you can try them on there and return them right away if need be.

The problem of being big, is that your friends all steal your equipment... because it'll fit anybody!

Very timely. I was just getting ready to start a post about waders. I purchased my big man waders 3 years ago from Cabelas and havent had a single issue. True to shoe size and they fit very comfortably. I'm 6'1 and 280.

I wanted a set of waders a little lighter than 5mm. I tried on multiple sets of waders from Cableas, with not luck.

I just received a set of waders from MPW and they fit absolutely perfectly. I bought last year's model for half the price. They were in stout and 3MM. Might give MPW a try. I can't speak for their field performance yet, but their fit is the best I've experienced. I wear a size 12 (13 in Nikes). They also have a slightly longer inseam than what I saw at Cabelas.

Hope that input can be helpful.

Good luck.

I went to mpw and looked at the selection, I would have bought a pair of the 2012 grand praire (i think) 5mm stout waders, called to find out about the sizing, but the salesman asked me to call back during regualar business hours so he didnt tell me wrong, I requested a catalog while on the site, and they emailed me a 15$ off coupon, and they have free shipping right now, so with them already discounted down to 169, plus the free shipping and 15$ off, itll be right at 100$ cheaper then the set I was looking at through cabelas, with the same features

I can dig it, Im most likely going to order tomorrow, after I can talk to someone to figure out how much room in the chest the stouts have.

my buddy used to use them, seemed like he had about 3 pairs where the boots got holes, or the boot seperated from the leg. seemed like nice waders, could have been how he treated them, they were way to long for him, im sure that contributed to it.

Bought my camo wader's at walmart of all places about 7 yrs ago never had an issue until this last season I managed to get a hole in them. Now I'm on the fence about finding the hole and sealing it or buying a new pair  :dunno: If I get a new pair I'll probably buy em from cabelas since its about 3 mins from my house. Atleast they have a great return policy too!!

I run the Drake waders myself. Get put through a lot and are holding strong. Get a new pair every year. Usually in different thicknesses so I'm good for any conditions. Drakes have Velcro straps and have never come undone on me and fit awesome. Big guy too at 6'6" 290 pounds. Highly recommended.

I have Lacrosse 1200's. I want a pair of the Cabelas Magnums. My Lacrosse's have about 3 tubes of wader glue on them. Still holding up great to be honest. Ive used them for 5+ years. I also have breathable waders from Cabelas. They are just tan though. Still work though.

I have Lacrosses 1200, and Cabellas 1000, both very good waders, don't buy the Columbias, if they still make them, cheap tore 1st season, and no return

I don't think you can beat Lacrosse for neoprene waders. My last pair lasted close to 10 years before I ripped them on a rod holder last year. Just picked up a pair of Lacrosse swamp tough waders for $100 off because Sportsmans isn't carrying them any more

When I read your comment I thought the warranty was awesome, and figured, even if a little more expensive, having the warranty would offset the extra cost, so I called to ask about it, and they said they only warranty the seams, nothing else 😔.

I'll be checking out some of the other waders mentioned here so far, hopefully I can find a good pair. The ones I'm using now I've had for over 15yrs, with a 7yr period in the middle of non-use. I've used a ton of aqua seal on em, but finally had a rip to big to fix. My search continues...

Could be she wasn't very forthcoming about that, so that it's not a widely known fact, thanks for telling me, I'll be giving their waders very careful consideration now, especially seeing that a lot of the better waders out there would be about the same price anyways, I might as well get ones that are totally custom, and have a great warranty 😎
