Title: Calling in cow elk
Post by: hogslayer on August 21, 2013, 12:09:32 PM
I have been hearing from different sources that calling in cows can be a little more tricky then it sounds.  I have a couple cow calls and a bugle.  So what are he successful ways of calling in cows or spikes?  Just cow calling?  Or bugle to find a bull and hope he has a heard around him?   I am hunting early archery east side.

I can't really say that I have called them in but I have definitely kept them where they were by calling.

Called one in in Colorado - just came trotting right over to 18 yards  8).  Called some cows over in E. WA too - more like they figured 'oh thats just another cow.. we can just hang out and eat... whack!'

Use a Bull calling cows bugle. Also I have heard Chuckling works.

We have called in and killed a few spikes and have called in cows just by doing a lot of Cow heard talk during the rut. Create the excitement in an area that holds elk and be patient. They will come.

spikes are easy to call in with a cow call, the cows like someone else said you can keep them in one spot by cow calling, I have located lots of elk using a cow call, the calves always giveaway there hiding spot.

Lost calf call
I called in 7 cows one morning. Just get near a natural barrier (creak, ridge, etc.) and sound that lost calf call and wait. They thought a little one was lost on the other side of the creek and hung out looking for it for over 3 hours.

absolutely it works.  We like just using regular cow talk.  It usually gets a calf to start sounding and then it all happens.  I wont hunt for spikes or cows any other way.

I called in one cow with lost calf.  I was trying to call for cougars when she came in all worked up.  I figured with the racket she was making and how close she was getting I was not going to call in a cat.  I stood up and she started running back and forth at about 50 yards barking her head off for about 5 mins before she finally left.  I was in plain sight after I stood up and she was still looking for that calf.  :chuckle:

Here is a great video I found on Youtube of a calf nursery.

Awesome video!  Thanks.   Now I just have to try some more calling before the wife gets home.  She doesn't like me to bugle and cow call in the living room :dunno:
