Title: What would you do?
Post by: QUINNB on August 23, 2013, 04:38:49 PM
So I have finally found some bear sign again.  Found 9 piles of scat on an old half mile tote road. There are berries on the road and some stumps that have been recently torn up and thick softwood cover on both sides. Above this road about 600 yards is a big clear cut with berries around the edge. This is my first year actually hunting bears and any input from people is greatly appreciated. From what I have read on here and other sources I have a good area. My question is how you would hunt it? Do I hunt the tote road either walk it slowly back and forth(there are three main trails that seem to be used) or sit on one of the trails? Do I hunt the clearcut and try calling or just sit and scan? Or is there a different way you would hunt it. Once again thanks for any input.

I would  set up some cameras. that would help take out some of the guess work to what to do.

I would walk the road and find likely spots to stop and call. Nothing shows itself in 45 mins move on down to another spot and repeat.

The only problem with walking the road and calling is there is limited visability on both sides of the rd. at most one spot you can see off for 25 yards but other than that it is 5 ft or less. A little more up close and personal than I would like lol. As for the trail cam, both mine are ties up for the bow opener.

Setup on the road two hours before sunset, I would setup where I have the best view and wait if he shows up  :dunno:

If there is limited visibility I would definitely do some calling, rabbit calls or fawn.  He will investigate if he is in the area.

It sounds like you have the right area at the moment. I would set up there in the morning. If you set up too late in the evening you will be trailing it in the dark or at the very least trying to process it after dark in the thick stuff if you don't kill it right where you see it and it runs.

Find a log jam or stump pile to call from. It will get you up higher for better visibility and you'll be safer. Either that or walk very slowly down theroad and hope to catch him on the edge s.

Mornings are the best in my experience, evenings seem to be more random.  Try to get the best viewpoint and get there an hour or two before first shooting light.

Unless there is fairly consistent traffic on the road I would not walk more than you can help, any human presence will make a non-human sensitized bear very spooky and wary.

Plant it all day, no calling yet, just sit....and listen! You will hear him probably before you see him! And it's a good excuse to just sit and enjoy Gods creation a little bit! Good luck!
