Title: West Bar
Post by: EyeTooth on August 28, 2013, 10:34:24 AM
Is there anyone on here that has a West Bar cow permit for this year, and/or any good information about the West Bar, and wouldn't mind talking about it through PM's?
We haven't been able to scout because of the fire, and the roads being washed out. The game department has helped us as much as they can, but there isn't much they can tell us yet. We do know the road from Wenatchee is still being repaired.
The season is sneaking up, and we would like to find out as much as we can about this unit and the present conditions as soon as we can. We do have a weekend set aside to scout, and want to make the most of our trip.
Thanks!

You may consider boat access for scouting and hunting...   :dunno:

That's a good idea Chukarhead.
We've thought of that too. It would definitely be the best way to go, but we aren't geared up for it.
Thanks for the idea!

Muzzy or Modern?

Boat access is the only way I'd go there.  Tried to drive it years ago, and it was like they made the road so rough purposely to discourage anyone from driving down there.  That road off the Colockum Road might even be closed now.   :dunno:

Thanks guys!
It's a modern permit, and we are expecting that the roads could be a problem for this years hunts.
Looks like a tight spot. All of the fires will sure make things good for the future though.
Thanks again.

Try to find a boat. That's the fastest and easiest way to hunt that place. Or swim, but I'm not man enough for that:)

Thanks Coyotecrazy,
I agree. It would be the best way, and a piece of cake even for our little boat as long as the weather was calm, but I've seen it be pretty ugly on the river with the wind while crossing the vantage bridge.
One way or another, we'll be trying to get there

There's a boat launch down at Crescent Bar, on the east side of the river.  West Bar is straight across the river from there.  Don't judge the whole river by what you see at Vantage--it's always windy there.  When the Elk get pushed, they swim across the river and go into the Trinidad area where they think it's safe.  With the fires, they may have already done so...  :dunno:

Use the boat access from C-bar...

Thank you Heredoggydoggy, Elkrunner, idahoelkhunter300wby, and Chukarhead,
I appreciate your advice!
We'll do the very best we can with whatever comes our way. I'm sure we're not the only ones wondering how our hunts are going to go this year as the fires and weather do there thing.
I hope you all have a blast in the woods this season, and are successful in all of your endeavors.

Thank you again,
ET

I live in Wenatchee and have a 23ft North River.  I've been duck hunting that section of the river for 10 years and know it well.  Crossing from Cresent Bar to the West Bar is easy.  I cant recommend crossing in a small boat.  Winds change rapidly down there.  I cant act as a daily shuttle but I could drop/pick up your party and camp gear.  Maybe even a couple dirt bikes so you can get around on the bar; if they are allowed.

509-663-1112 and ask for Matt.  We can talk about how I can help.
