Title: Dominant Blacktail question
Post by: FLIZZ on September 03, 2013, 12:02:49 PM
So here's the deal, around my neck of the woods there's this 2x3 that i've been seeing for at least the last 3 years. If I had to eye score him I'd say he probably sits around 90" but it seems like he hasn't grown at all in that three year span, and yes, i'm sure its the same buck, he has a monster body and a smaller 3pt companion,  I can recognize him all day. He seems to be the Dominant buck around here, but I could be wrong, it just seems so strange to me that with all the 2pts and spikes I've seen around here for the last 8 years, there isn't another Dominant (big) buck in the mix with that 2x3. To make a long story short, if you had your opinion on this, would you say that there's another hog buck in my area that Is just to smart/seasoned to show himself? I'm trying to figure this out because over the years I've had a couple chances to dumpcat the 2x3, I just held out for something bigger. This year if I see him though he's dead, gotta get those bad genes outta here and let his perfect 3x3 buddy take over... if that's the case anyways.

Definitely kill the large bodied small rack deer.  A lot of times it's the body size that will determine dominance not the rack.  Muscle has a lot more to do with the fight than the head gear.  Get his crappy genes out of there because he's the one who's breeding.

bad genetics, so definatly kull him out, i am sure there is a bigger racked buck around, probably strictly noc turnal though, have you seen anything with more points than the 2x3?even if you crack the 2x3 a bigger buck will move on in or one of the younger bucks will take over. hopefully with better minerals and genetics... have you put out suppliments for them to help with the mineral intake? if you have bad genetics and low mineral content then you wont have the real big heavy racked bucks, with the sounds of the size of the bodies i would be putting out some serious mineral deposits for them, it will really help in about 3 to 5 years, good luck

so it's possible that there's an older bigger antlered buck in the mix that isn't the dominant buck? I would say the 2x3 is 5 to 6 years old. Also, nutrient wise i live in a pretty good area, Brother shot a 120" no more than 6 miles from this bucks zone, and i remember seeing a pig blacktail in my yard when I was a wee little lad.

There could be a bigger one around and this big bodied buck keeps kicking his a$$ and preventing him from breeding.  You should be able to see them during the summer and early fall when they aren't rutting though.

I'm going to try and rattle this buck in come late October. We'll see that happens.

minerals and nutrients can change alot in a certain amount of time, if the minerals are there then is bad genetics, so you need to wack that buck that kicks arse and hope a better buck with better genetics takes over, or ya just gotta start kulln, hopefully we get to see you post up a pic of that mean old 2x3  :chuckle: good luck to ya
