Hey bro I'll help you posts pics if you help me kill a bull! :chuckle:
Good job seriously keep the streak going
-
Killed this 5x5 on opening day. Not really a story got on a good elk trail about 30 minutes after light and new right away that there were elk in front of me up the trail. Put it in sneak mode and walked up on the rear of three bulls possibly four feeding on the trail. Two of the bulls both larger than the one I killed veered of the trail and did not present a shot. This bull I shot caught movement, jumped a few feet and looked back at about 30 yards quartering away hard. I placed the arrow right in front of the rear hind and ran it up through the chest towards the front leg.
-
Congrats Nubbs..! thats a good lil hole you have there
Although some would say, without the pic, it never happened. or something like that

I only found two dried up wallows, I think I dropped down the wrong area.. I stayed left a little too much. I dropped directly inline with the road facing east before it turns back north. I think I needed to be south a little bit more.. where I dropped off was complete hell.. worst experience ive ever had and that is saying something because I went up where your bro shot his nice one in 03 or 04 haha.

Yep... you needed to stay on top of the ridge for a ways further before droppng off... you would have hit some nice fairly open dark timber loaded with elk trails and fresh elk sign. I have been down thru close to where you dropped off and it is pretty hairy!!
-
Yea as soon as I got down and looked up I knew I went the wrong area.. I slid a couple times on my butt for 10-20 feet having to scramble to grab brush to keep me from going all the way down.. the hike up and across was excellent though very easy going. Coming down well im still limping today haha. Glad I got to see your bull and talk to you and your old man. Definitely some of the most knowledgeable elk hunters in the state imo!!

yes that is sam. we had six bull tags this year. we were in bulls everyday but couldn't pull it off. sam was the only one who got one.
-
Wow six tags! That's amazing! Congrats to him. We're the bulls fired up? Heard it was a tough one this year. SAMs bull is outstanding. I have seen several like him up thier. Too cool. Did he shoot him low or up high on the mountain?

Finally getting around to posting it..Opening evening bull..Southwest WA

sam got his up on fifes. me and the guy that had the bull tag last year were up high in the area they met you. we were in some monsters but they weren't very talkative. I missed a monster on the last Saturday. shot over his back. he was pushing 360. was really thick and some nasty terrane where we were finding the bulls. they would get fired up if you could get in a 200 yard range of them and try and sneak in on them. the were all circling and trying to get our wind. it swirled really bad in there. mornings we could get a few responces and would go quiet around 8am. then start back up about 6 pm.
-
Some very nice bulls being taken.

Huntgreg It's a great area. Sorry bout the miss. How far was you shot? Awkward shot?
39 yards with a limb i didn't see in the way. hit the limb and over its back it went. Had one opening to shoot through. and hit the only thing in the way. We were back in there to the south side of the trail sam met you on. Lots of bulls in there. didn't see any cows up there. There were guys up there bugling from the road everywhere. I cant be leave how many guys go up to ravens roost just to bugle. We were down below one morning and some guy was bugling like crazy and nothing would answer him back. we waited until he left i bugled one time and we had 3 bulls go off. Its like they know the people up on top are hunters. a lot harder hunting this year compared to last year.
-
I believe that unit will get better and better in the next few years. Now that it's back to a draw only. I couldn't agree more about the lunatics on raven roost.
-
Also too bad about your shot. It doesn't matter how small the limb your broad head always seems to find it.
-
Opening day, Once I stopped shaking in my boots, I was able to make the 20 yard shot!
Nice bull brah! Proud of you kid! So awesome!
-
Alot of great bulls to start out the year.

My pictoral tale of woe
-
Wow, so is that a slow mo picture of an arrow hitting the bull?
-
My pictoral tale of woe
awesome... just awesome... where are the after photos, are these video stills or is your shutter that fast?
-
WOW, amazing pictures. :yike:
-
Photos are stills captured from the video. The bull has been seen recently. He is favoring his right side (you think?) but appears like he will survive. I'll sleep better tonight!
-
Wow. Some footage...
-
With my arrows, that would have been a dead bull.
-
"With my arrows, that would have been a dead bull."
I don't know how that could be. My arrow plainly said it is the toughest arrow I'll ever shoot :dunno:
-
...I'm just spitballin' here... but if I had to guess I'd say that the problem isn't the arrow. Looks like a shoulder blade did most of the deciding there... :dunno:
-
...I'm just spitballin' here... but if I had to guess I'd say that the problem isn't the arrow. Looks like a shoulder blade did most of the deciding there... :dunno:
This.
Shot placement, not the arrow, was the issue.
-
Man that's to bad ...I know of at least 4 bulls getting away this year :bdid: just to many factors to a perfect ending ....
-
That arrow looks like it got more then enough penetration in the 4th pic :dunno:
-
i would be amazed if that bull is still alive...
-
one lung ! dead bull but I bet he went a hell of a long way . you may wanna go look for ravens and magpies
-
High in the body cavity.
The entire cavity must fill with blood before it spills out.
Bummer.
-
the fun part !

If so nice one man read that story awsome.

Nice work . Definetly have to respect the hunters privacy, there is so little of it these days. I don't know who got the bull but congratulations and I don't blame them one bit for not wanting to post it on here.
-
Pig of a bull, hope it gets posted up with more pics and a story.

It was on the hooks and horns Facebook page so I didn't think it was a private pic. Didn't mean any disrespect.

They posted it without permission from the hunter.

If he is a member here and does not post more photos and a story I say we start a petition to have him banned from this site. We need more info on that hog!!!! :chuckle:

We worked hard for five days covering many miles and clear-cuts on bikes and foot. Where it was accessible (and sometimes when it wasn’t), we hiked down, (and back up) many spurs and draws, hoping to see a bull. We saw quite a few cows in the clear-cuts, but not a single bull. We saw very little fresh sign; everything looked old everywhere. Frustration and doubt began to come along with the growing physical exhaustion. It felt like our last night of hunting, so we decided to go in long and deep one more time before the inevitable “road hunting.”
We biked in a few miles, and split up on logging spur roads, and after a half-hour or so, I could see my hunting partner walking down a long spur/ridge across a large draw. Then I stopped to ‘glass’ down in the bottom and instantly spotted a bull! Its’ dark red-ish Roosevelt rack was obviously larger than 3 points, so I didn’t bother trying to count. Dropping to the ground, I grabbed my garmin radio/gps, and say “I see a big bull and I’m going down after it. (His radio was in his pack so he never heard me) I slipped out of my backpack leaving everything behind except my rifle. For one moment I was going to unzip the pack and get my rangefinder but changed my mind.
Belly crawling down the clear-cut, I popped my head up a couple times to see the bull still standing there feeding. I felt a desperate anxiety that he was going to bust me, or just walk away before I could close enough distance for a shot. So I crawled a long way, deciding not to look up until I could get much closer. After about 75 yards, there was stuff in my way and I couldn’t see him. Now I got really scared; almost thought I wouldn’t reach him in time.
Following a section of trail down a turn, I crawled behind a tree stump to look over it. He was still there, with his head down feeding, and had no idea I was there! He was still pretty far away, but I knew he was well under 200 yards, and down at a steep angle. And my tree stump made for a perfect shooting bench! I looked around to see if there was a better place to setup and get closer. I had the best spot. (The next day I ranged the distance at exactly 150 yards.)
There was a half- fallen tree covering his chest and vitals, and I had no shot. So I got into position and waited. I had soo much time to sit there and watch that I actually tried a couple different positions and got completely comfortable. I lined up the bull in my peep site and waited….and waited…for what seemed like 10 minutes; it was probably 2 or 3 minutes. I decided I did not need to compensate for distance or wind. He stepped forward and I put my front pin over his vitals. He took one more step and I knew it was now!
Every amount of focus within me was summoned to hold the rifle still as I began to slowly squeeze until… ..boom! I quickly leaned sideways to see around the smoke cloud. He was pitched back dramatically and crashed backwards on the ground dead. I stood up and started reloading my Disk Extreme, but about the time I got the powder in, it was clear I wouldn’t need another shot. He was down!
Excited, I worked my way to the bull, still afraid something could go wrong. Was it the same bull I glassed? It had to be, but…..? My fears faded as I counted points; four by five! And the shot was perfect. It missed his heart and one lung, but whatever it did hit did the job instantly. (No expansion on the Barnes 290TMZ; just a dent on the side of the tip with the polymer tip smashed in. )
After a half-hour frantic search for my pack (which had everything in it) I got on the radio and got ahold of my hunting partner. He said he saw three does 20 yards from me, and wondered if I’d completely snapped and shot at them! We packed out backstraps, tenderloins, heart, and rack several miles in the dark, We got back to camp at almost midnight. We hiked back in the morning and got the quarters out.
I could not/would not have had this opportunity without Eric, (who was there), or Jesse, who was hunting with his Dad a few miles away. Thanks to both of you, and a special thanks to Eric for being “all-in” on this hunt, from start to finish!

Great lookin bulls guys! I shot a nice 5x5 on sep 2..... sadly never found it.... my girl and I set up and made some cow calls.. seconds later we heard elk coming... we were about 40 ft apart... first was a spike... he came up the trail to amber.. had him less then 10 yrs but obviously he was not legal..... so off he went.. about 20 sec later I caught movement and a nice 5x5 comes up the same trail and starts feeding. I was hopin he would take the same trail as the spike, but he turned left and started feeding to me.... I watched him for over 5 min... under 30 yrds... never had a clue we were there... finally he fed out at 20 yrds... he came into this old skid road and stopped... slightly quartered to me..... for WHATEVER reason my 20 pin found the crease in the shoulder and not slightly in front given the angle.... arrow zipped through him with that hollow whack we all love to hear... the second after I shot I realized my mistake.... gave him 2 hrs and had blood for 200 yrds then nothing.... we looked/hunted that area for 5 more day and never could find the body or any smell or death..... I have killed far too many deer/elk with a bow to make such a stupid mistake but I did and have no issue admitting to it... I assume I got maybe one lung and center punched the liver... we all know how far they can go on such a shot..... we had a great week in the woods and got into many many more encounters.. bu that was my only shot on a bull for 2013.......

Just now posting about my dad's elk hunt out on the West End this year... What an amazing bull and an awesome hunt. My dad had been seeing this bull in his month of scouting the area prior to the hunt. He had also seen a number of large 5x5's and a 6x6, plus a ton of brush rack bulls. This bull was truly a monster though. On the 2nd day of muzzleloader season, he had seen this bull in the morning but couldn't get a good shot opportunity so he let him be without aggressively pursuing him and risking the possibility of never seeing him again. Sure enough, the bull was back in the same spot an hour before dark. Just as my dad was about to pull the trigger on a large 5x5 with great mass, this bull came out from behind some cows and brush bugling hard. He quickly put a shot on him at 70 yards right behind the shoulder and the rest was history. It was a nice and easy downhill pack out about 150 yards to the truck. Couldn't ask for a better hunt. This is the Westside bull of a lifetime for my Dad and he is having it shoulder mounted.

Very cool bull, Congrats to your dad.

:yeah: :chuckle:

That lower head gear looks pretty cool
-
Ya, the one eye guard is broken at the tip, but man that thing must have been long. He might still be alive, I was fortunate to be able to drag him out from the road with my truck. Couldnt have asked for an easier kill. And only 5min drive from home base camp. He had a wound on his neck and had an infected spot where I think he was hit with a broadhead last year. But no arrow tip left in him so not really sure. The rack def has some character.

Great Bulls everyone!
I was super blessed with my year. Good deer season and an excellent elk season. Got this guy out of the deep Idaho Hells Canyon a couple weeks ago. 8 days of living in the wilderness. This guy took me about 8 hours the first night and finished packing him out the next day by about 4 in the afternoon. Was awesome an im already looking forward to heading back next year!
My best bull so far and an unforgettable evening. 500+ yard shot with my Win mdl70, 270Win. Dropped him like a sack of rocks.

you know i wasnt going to post them at all. i have the last couple years though. i would challenge you to hunt the country we do. granted this year one bull was on an open ridge, yet it was so steep we were able to drag him whole down to the creek and then had to cut him in half to get him back to the truck, but nontheless it was a full days job. i have some great stories to go with all my families hunts but it seems to be a waste because of people like you who are only here to cause drama. you didnt raise these animals and everyone who wants to be informed of when and how we can harvest animals has that access just like we know when to stay out of the woods when your hunting. there are a few on here that know me and will back me that know where and how i hunt and the work we do put in for these animals. we hunt archery as well and have a blast every year too. being in the woods is what i enjoy the most and being able to associate with some of the hunters on here and meet new guys is part of my fun too. thought everyone would like to see a couple pics of big bulls, not to rub it in. :twocents:

This is a thread for folks to display their success this elk season.
That is all.
Leave it that way and don't ruin a good thing.
Carry on.

cool! what's your rifle? mauser of some variety?

that rifle is always a good conversation starter haha. it is a 308 norma mag. custom built rifle that a guy in our elk camp years ago, it has a bull barrel custom action also the trigger is set at a crisp 1.5pounds. Im right handed but he was left handed thats why the cheek piece is on that side. the only down fall is it ways 11 or 12 pounds so it gets a little heavy packing around. but it makes for a steady shot!

2 fine bulls ...that's awesome :dunno: :chuckle:

sickens me to see two bulls that should still be alive for us to hunt next year instead poached by some Indian hunts. Sicken to watch big bulls shot mostly by the tribes when they continue to limit our hunting tags. BS is what it is.

First elk.
Friday the 13th
Called in and stuck at 36 yards, ran up the hill and stopped, stuck again at 42 and he rolled.
Pretty much how we all imagine an elk hunt to go, but never expect it to.
