Title: Reloading steel in shotshells
Post by: huntingfool7 on September 05, 2013, 02:29:35 PM: I'm new to reloading shotgun ammo. So far I've done up some lead target loads for skeet on an old MEC 600jr. I'm looking at trying my hand at some steel shot loads.

In factory ammo, I've been a pretty devoted Kent Faststeel guy normally running 3 inch 1-3/8 oz. of #3's for everything.

What home rolled recipes are you using? (hull/wad/shot load/primers).

Post by: huntingfool7 on September 05, 2013, 03:32:17 PM: Hi Uplandhunter, I was looking at the Hodgdons website and that's actually why I posted this question. They only show 7/8 or 1 oz shot charges. They also list Universal as the only powder choice.

Not sure that I'd give up my factory Kents for 1 oz reloads that top out at 1300 fps.

Have not settled on a powder yet. Looking for something that I'd be happy to shoot at roosters/quail. I have a couple pounds of SR4756 that may be suitable for this purpose. Also, I've seen Steel powder on the shelf frequently the last month or so. I didn't snatch it up because I don't have recipe for it.

I understand that there is information in there regarding duplex loads. I'm playing with the idea of running 6's or 7's under 3's for eastside quail and pheasants. A guy on another site said he's had good success with duplex loads and that they pattern really well. He thinks the smaller pellets "draft" the larger pellets that are loaded up front.
