Title: Elk moo like cattle? Not mew
Post by: Johnb317 on September 07, 2013, 01:08:49 PM
Hunting in the hills near Raymond and the Rosie's have vanished.
No sound, nada.  Except every once in awhile we have heard a moo.
Partner says spastic bull, I'm a little sceptical.

Anyone hear a Rosie moo?    Any serious suggestions?  Tired of being breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the Mosquitos.  And quitting is not an option.

Oh man the mosquito's are the worst this year. I was chewed up the first day and got some unscented off after that. I haven't heard elk moo. Good luck on the hunt.

Had a bull in Eastern Oregon answer my calls and he sounded just like a moo cow, with all the range cattle in the area I didn't even give it a second thought and kept moving. The moo cow ballered 3-4 times and the last time the "cow" gave out a couple of chuckles at the end of the bawler. Game on, wind shift and out blows a nice 6 point. He was probably hoarse as some bulls get that way after a few weeks of rutting. Some advice from one helluva bowhunter I know told me, if you are calling and here something and you don't what it was, find out what it was. Elk make some odd, different sounds and in the mountains sounds get distorted and carry differently than a guy would think. :twocents:

Did Smossy find a substitute for his lost calls?  Is that what the OP is hearing?

I have not heard one sound like a bovine.......But I have heard and seen a cow elk, sound off like a chimpanzee, (closes I can come to describing the sound).......I figured she was ready and no boys around to take care of the itch.....so she was telling everyone within earshot, she was READY! And it is loud, every bit as loud as a bugle.

Haha he took mine (one came with a duplicate) and I haven't heard from them since they left. Don't think they're in the same area as the OP.

I have heard that the bugs and the chemicals in the bug juice have an effect on the subject and can cause one to start hearing funny sounds while out and about in the woods! :dunno: I was in the same situation with the bugs and the juice, then hearing what I thought was a mew and thinking that it was a moo and started :yeah:  looking for a cow elk, only to see a bobcat on a log.
