Title: Elk Season - How did everyone do?
Post by: Little Fish on September 16, 2013, 06:14:07 PM
Hey all....I am just curious how everyone did with elk this year. I personally had my worst season yet out of 8 years chasing elk with bow (I hunt Westside). My partner and I had one good opportunity to take a bull and a few times we heard/saw cows that we couldn't get on. Given the hot weather and earlier season it really only seemed like we had 4 or 5 days out of the season that were really good hunting days (as defined by hearing or seeing elk). I only heard 3 bugles the whole season and never had a single bull respond to a locator bugle. This compares to prior years when I've had anywhere from 3-10 bulls call back to me.

Where I am going with this is that I plan on writing WDFW and asking them to put our season back to where it was 3+ years ago. I recall years hunting when the season started approximately a full week later than this year (and last) and was open a full week later. The later the season, the greater the likelihood of cooler weather, the closer to the peak of the rut and the less likely the timber companies will close their land down. I know 1 letter isn't going to do much, but if other bow hunters shared my sentiments and we all sent letters it might make a difference.

we hiked 3 miles into a wilderness area in the dark. Saw nothing ...heard nothing......saw no fresh sign

I had an eastside bull tag. Hunted ten out of the 13 days in the season. There was absolutely zero bugling until last Thursday the 12th. Basically the first week and a half of the season I deer hunted because the elk just would not talk or react to any calls. On the 2nd to last day of the season I called a big 6 point into 20 yards in some burned timber but I couldn't get a clean shot because of the slope of the hill and the brush, you would think hunting a burn would be easy but it was not. Eventually he busted me because he caught my wind. And last evening we finally got on another bull but couldn't get him to commit and eventually he moved off.

When I found out I drew this tag I knew it wouldn't be a slam dunk but I figured that I would have several opportunities at bulls and at least be able to kill a small bull. The heat just killed the hunting from 9 until almost 6 in the evening. I think I heard one bugle after 10 o clock and that was from a bull that I had been dogging all morning long. I believe that if the season started later and ran until the end of this week the outcome could be much different. Especially with this storm moving through. I only heard of three bulls killed in my unit out of nearly 30 tags. So I know i wasn't the only one struggling.

Heard some animals but could never get close to them.  Heard bulls bugling in the night, early in the morning, and even one at 10am but I'm not sure if that was a hunter or not?  Last few days got into our next hunt and someone starting shooting a high powered rifle.  That was fun.  I enjoyed time hunting (or as my wife and friends call it "hiking with a bow and arrow") with my son and hunting partners.  A day in the woods beats working any day!

My hunting partners had an opportunity the first few days but couldn't seal the deal.  I learned a new GMU a bit better and maybe late hunt will be more successful.  Gave a hand to a fellow hunter getting his first Elk out of the woods and chased a few grouse around.

It was tough with the warm weather but I did manage to locate a bull and put an arrow in him. This was on the west side.

Absolutely amazing. I had 2 crappy bow shots that would have been excellent rifle shots. Both bulls were called in. And my bro killed a big 5x6.

I spent 5 days, the first week hunting very hard, hiking many miles, without so much as fresh sign or hearing anything...

The last day of early archery season I bugled in a huge bull, he hung up at about 60 yards, so I went after him.  Closed the distance, missed a beautiful broadside shot by estimating the distance at 40 yards.  Later, having my son stand in the elk's tracks, me standing where I shot from, I ranged my son at 58 yards.  I had my range finder hanging on my neck the entire time...UGH!

This was my worst year in 7 years of archery elk hunting. Between the crowds, quads ( on Weyerhaeuser land) and loggers driving around looking at elk after work we couldn't get anything to fire up until Sunday. I called a bull into 40 yards but he busted out after catching the scent of 3 guys in the same drainage as us. It was frustrating, but it was land everybody could hunt. The thing that pissed me off the most was the fat guy on the quad. We told him it was walk in access only and he said " why are you guys mad at me, you chose to walk."  :bash:I said no I chose to follow the rules. I'm contemplating no longer hunting Washington. I saw more elk last year in Idaho than I did in 3 seasons here.

Great year for our camp on the eastside. Had 5 cows down in 5 days. We had 10 people hunting in our camp. Scouting paid off big time this year!

Thanks for the replies. Glad to hear the success stories. Other folks I talked to in my area reported similar results as I had. I'm going to write WDFW and assume if other archery guys think the season would be better if moved back they will do the same.

There are only so many hunting seasons I have in me to hunt as hard as I do now pushing 5-10 miles back each day and I hate to waste them hunting less than ideal conditions. Maybe its time to make Washington my backup hunt and try Idaho or Oregon as my primary hunt. It works for salmon fishing! The best salmon and bottom I fishing I experience all year is in Canada even though I still do some fishing locally.

It was awesome, two hours the first night to find them on the 5th, massive rain storm all night kept them bedded down all night so within 30 minutes the next morning I had my Colockum cow down.  My wife had to work and the kids had school so they came over the next day and got into 3 different spikes but just couldn't close the deal.  We had a blast and saw some nice bulls. I took my daughters into the woods and got them in the middle of all the action and bugling just for the experience of hearing and seeing it all.  They were awestruck at 8 and 11 years old.  Now we are just waiting on rifle season for my 11 year old and I promised to take her out with me deer hunting for the late season.  She is now big enough to handle the steep, deep and cold.  Best hunting partners in the world my wife and daughters.

There you go, the season needs to go back to set dates, not floating, and be the 8th-20th or something like that.

If they don't go back to a later start date I will either take my money out of state next season or only hunt the late season. Lots of people and way to warm of temperatures.

I personally don't mind the earlier season but if something must change open deer and elk the same day! Tired of the deer hunters trompin through the elk woods before the opener. :twocents:

We did okay.  8). I hunted two days and filled my tag on a nice spike.  I also had elk bugling both days I hunted (7th and 8th).

This was my first year going out for elk. I bought an eastside tag and have it my best for two days, in which time I saw three elk two cows and one unidintified elk at 40 yards I could not see it head though. I proceeded to go after it but some how that huge animal gave me the slip without making so much as a sound, very impressive. On the day I came into some amazing area and found a nice six point shed. All and all I'd say it was a very successful first hunt though I didn't bring home any meat, I had a great time and learned a lot. That area opens back up for the late archery season in November and I think I might return to give it another two day go.

Finally heard a bull bugle today. I got within 80 yards of the 5x6, but a  cow at 60 yards busted me so I did not get a shot. I watched then run almost a mile with the bull limping the whole way. Not sure if it was hoof rot or if someone clipped him, but I did not see any signs of injury.

Went to Colorado tis year. My buddy shot a 4x5 bull with his primitive self bow.... 7 yard shot, 100 yard blood trail. Buddy #2 got another 4x5 with his ultra high tech compound, 25 yard shot and 50 yard blood trail. I had a cow tag so naturally just had a couple of bulls close and personal.

You can whine about the temps being too hot in WA, but the converse is the rain in Colorado.

I did shoot a bull this year, but the rut activity was almost non-existant.  I had bulls in my setup almost everyday the year before, and this year I seen maybe six bulls total one of which resides in the freezer.  They seemed lackluster vocally, and I had very few curious bulls come in most of them I ran into while getting from A to B.

Called in a cow and Calf opening weekend the Kid I was with shot the calf.  Last Friday I hike up on the Mt. to a sweet mud wallow I located and build a blind.  Sit in the ground blind from before sun up to 6:00 pm  give a call on the bugle and hear one below me in the meadow.  Call again and hear the bugle and then cow calls.  Know right off that it is another hunter so I leave the area not wanting them to find the wallow.  I get on the other side of the Meadow and bugle again and I hear the hunter bugle back.  I locate a bunch of Chanterelle mushrooms and start picking and watch two young guys come running across the meadow.  Both dressed in blue jeans and red and white checkered logger shirts.  I'm watching them run across with arrows knocked and praying that they don't trip and fall.  They come across and then try to walk into the timber.  I'm still picking mushrooms and they walk towards me so I figure I better let them know I'm not an elk. I say hello and the kid lets off of the bow string and blows the air out of his lungs.  He ask me if I had bugled and I tell him that I had.    I ask him if they are going to hunt here tomorrow and this 16-17 year old kid looks at me and say' Sir, I hunt where God tells me to hunt".  I looked at him and I asked him if god had mentioned anything about keeping the wind in your face because he has been hunting with the wind at his back for the last two hours.  I then mention to him that God may not have mentioned it but I'm sure one of the Apostles might have mentioned something about wearing Camo when bow hunting and wished them luck.  The buddy about fell over laughing.

Saturday I'm back at the mud wallow at first light.  I notice the water is still muddy and go sit in my ground blind.  At 2:30 a rag horn 5x5 with two cows come in.  The little bull is prancing around playing with the cows.  The bull and one cow stay above the wallow and the other cow starts feeding towards me.  She is ten yards up from me feeding on the other side of some vine Maple, no shot.  The bull steps out of the timber and walks towards the wallow.  He is 15 yards in front of me.  He stops broadside and looks back into the timber at the other cow.  I come to full draw pull down behind his shoulder and the cow barks, he wheels and my arrow zips right by him and they all take off I hunted until 6:00 and then start hunting/walking the three miles back to my truck reliving the incident and although I want to cry I'm thankfull for the experience and I pick another 40 pounds of Mushrooms.  Thank God I have a Multi-season tag.

I've got until the 22nd on my Margaret bull tag. Haven't had a ton of time to hunt, but has been slower than I could imagine so far. Most guys I've talked to down there agree- seeing few to no animals at all. Plan on cashing in this week

My honey hole was ready to produce.  I had several bulls coming in all summer long along with a ton of cows.  Set my stands the weekend before opening day and checked my cams. Everything going as planned.  Went to attach my ladder steps to my trees the day before elk came in and checked my cams one last time. Not bad. I had 89 pics in a week. I had noticed that on the last 4 pics that someone else was looking over my mineral site.  My camera was still there so I didn't pay much attention to it at that time.  Later that night I looked at the pics again and noticed that the other hunter had actually turned my camera around in a different direction and then turned it back so it was facing the right direction. The last 2 pics was of that azzhole (literally). One was of him pissing on my mineral site and the last pic was of him *censored*ting. The *censored* had a face mask on too.  I was there at 10:05am. The *censored* was there at 9:59am!. Just minutes before I got there. He was probably standing there laughing his azz off as he watched me check my camera. I still don't know what I would have done if I would have walked up and seen him with his pants down taking a crap.  I mean can you still beat the crap out of someone that just got done taking a crap? What would you have done?  Anyways, that bunghole messed my area up for a week or so, but the joke is on him.  We got one on the 13th (cow), from that exact stand location. I'll be posting those pics here in a day or two.

Assuming this was on land with public access. You about have to expect it. Be thankful they left the cam. You probably would have done just as well without the mineral site. My  :twocents:

Biked in 4 miles to camp, hunted hard miles in all directions from camp. Seen some cows and some spikes, heard some other cows but the bulls were not talking. My brother missed a bull on day 4 or 5 that came in on him quiet. We traveled after leaving camp. Only heard 3 elk bugle all season. The three that were heard were not really all out bugleing, more half a$$ed bugleing. They were not fired up yet and would just try to go the other way. Frustrating season for sure.

Don't settle for mediocrity!  It should be the 8th thru the 22nd every year.  A solid two weeks.

I have sent a letter asking for it to be changed to that this year rather than wait for the rolling date in 2015 and will send another stating the same thing at the end of the season.  If every archer did that would be a lot of squeaky wheels and maybe we would see the change in dates to a fixed date starting in 2014.

Well, this was my first Elk hunt and I must say I'm completely addicted now. To bad I moving to Missouri next year. We packed in about 4 miles and hunted 7 days on the Wet Side. Were in elk 4 of the 7 days but I couldn't close the deal. Having a good size 6 point within 30 yards, will for sure get the blood pumping. I did end up with a small bear and had one of the best hunts of my life.  Thanks to everyone on here that offered advice, it was appreciated.

Tag soup wet side.
Hot weather and they bugged out
1 week old sign and tons of Mosquitos.
One lackluster bugle, not enough to pinpoint.

Thinking Idaho or somewhere with more reasonable dates.

Sigh

Our camp went 2-3 with a 5x4 and cow. We were in Elk everyday from the start. Wasn't a lot of bugling going on. Did call in a nice 4x4 and my friend missed at 20 yds, I was trying to calm him down, he was shaken so bad he hit a tree.

We had a 6x herding cows around, but was a tough cookie to get to answer or anything else.

But, meat in the freezer.

Thanks Rainier10! The more vocal we are the better our chances of getting the season changed back.

not a good year for elk at all!!! drove over 700 miles, hiked over 50 miles and got 3 bugles. did see a handfull of elk but could close the deal. wasn't able to hunt the first 4 days of the season due to work but not sure if it would have made a differance. hopefully something changes and they push the season back.

We had the same problem back home in Idaho this year. Weather was ungodly hot for sept (mid to high 80s) the whole time. We were able to get in on two button bulls and I got a 3yr old cow, but all three came out of more chance. Last 4 days, out of 2 1/2 weeks, the bulls started firing up a little but not much, and after shooting light. We got into several heards though but, as you said, we couldnt get in on them close enough for bow range. Im looking at late archery here in Washington (military @ Ft Lewis) see how my luck fairs out.

We went 2 for 3. 3rd guy missed twice. Hunted the eastside, backpacker in, up near the crest. Both were cows, no bull tags. Elk around every day and saw a lot of bulls. We had bulging nearly every day unlike some other posts. Moose tag to fill next.

Too damn hot.  Had 2 cows @ 40 yrds and didn't shoot. Couldn't get a bull to answer at all. Waiting for late season.

The honey hole produced again.  4x4 bull with the left antler busted at the skull, the hide was keeping it from falling off.

I got to camp and set up around 3 AM on the 8th, hunted that evening and saw a few elk over 2 miles away with no way to get to them in time.  Hunted the next morning and got some cows and calves to answer back to my bugling but couldn't get on them.  Killed my bull the evening of the 9th.  Didn't hear any bugling and after talking to some other hunters, they hadn't heard much bugling either.

Simply put, hope late season holds more than early season or there will be a high probability of quad tag stew, i didnt even have squirrels come in thanks to an obsurd amount of grouse hunters. And these are a couple of the pics i had on the camera i put up in may

I had a blast.  I was greedy and came home with nothing.  I had many opportunities to kill cows and I did shoot at a 4x4 early in the season than I saw the big dawg...  I did nothing but hunt him.  Good bull and enjoyed every minute.

This is first year archery hunting & has been great so far. We were hunting in SW part of state. My sons & I have not been able to get in position for a shot yet, but have seen animals. We hunted the first 5 days, and only saw cows & spikes. The rain, wind & fog made things interesting. Looking forward to getting back out in late season for another go.
