Title: Best mileage yet!!! What's your worst and best...
Post by: cohoho on September 17, 2013, 07:52:17 PM
Well it is time for new tires, they made it 67,800 miles in 2 years and probably have another 2-3k left- ok maybe that is a stretch.  #1 reason why I like Coopers the best and Discount Tires has the best prices around Washington.  They were on my 2500 Duramax.  So a new set of Coopers ST Maxx's are ordered up and should be here tomorrow or Thursday.  My best mileage before was from Coopers on my Ford 350 at 60K and they were the AT style and half the time was on snow pack in AK.  Worse mileage ever is from Toyo's (crap) MT's at 22K on my Duramax...  Slightly under a year and they were bald...

I think it is amazing the differences I hear about the Toyo MT's. I have ran them on 3 different trucks and have had excellent luck. All 3 sets have pushed the 70k mile limit. Unreal.  On the other hand My dad had a set and got just over 30k. Just weird. It is like they have material issues or something.

I have yet to hear anything bad about the Cooper's. are you running the SST's?

I had coopers on my F150, got exactly 100,000 out of them, could have made it a little longer, but winter was coming

I did before on the Ford, but have the ST Maxx, kind of their hybrid between AT and MT type.    Great ride, no tread noise and decent aggressive enough for the very limited off road stuff I get involved with, plus actually very good traction on snow and ice.    Got 4 - 285/75/16 with road hazard, for $1100 at discount.  (maybe repeat buyer discount) Les Swaub wanted $1600..

I started with Cooper years ago, when 90% of all haul road trucks in AK had them on, I did 8 trips up the haul road with Coopers and never had a flat, ever!  Unheard of for sure with 99% other trucks with different tires we buddied with for the trip...

I've got a '02 Toyota Tacoma 4X4.  The best I've got was early this summer with nearly 24 MPG.  The worst I've got with it was after a hard day of four wheeling with around 17 MPG.

Mileage on tires is VERY dependent on application. TOYO MT are NOTORIOUS  tires for wearing quickly on full sized trucks but getting great mileage on Toyotas and lighter rigs. Here is a little known fact. Michelin sends the highest % off gross rev on R&D Goodyear come in second.  Off the top of my head i think its 5% for Michelin and 3% for good year. BFG is a brand owned by Michelin.

My Brother is a logger and swears by Toyo M-55 That seems to be a really popular commercial style tread and casing design but  its not available in all sizes. My all time favorite is the BFG all terrain, and the 2nd would be the old MT design.  :twocents:

I have the st Maxx on my f150 and it is the best tire I have ever seen. Probably the best rock tire ever made. They are heavy but man I have taken my truck up some roads that I told myself I would never go up unless I was on a quad because of the rocks. I really believe the three ply sidewall is necessary for rocky roads. Also, these tires never chip on the rocks

Wondering if anybody has ran Hankook dynapro MT's on there 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. I'm interested in what type of mileage you got out of them? And how about performance? I had Hankook ATM's on my last truck and they got great mileage and performed great for an AT.

I will also be looking into the Coopers as well before I order up the Hankook's, Thanks for the input!

Best I had was Goodyear Workhorse 31-10.5-15 on my Toyota Tacoma.  No lie I had 110K on those suckers when I sold the pickup, rotated every 5k.  I have Toyo MT on my diesel F350 and at about 25K they look to be about 2/3 gone.

I have a couple of buddies that did good with the good year Wrangle duratrack on thier full size trucks. I have some tires like that on my Subaru that are rockin both good milage and great grip.

The Goodyear Duratracs are an excellent traction tire, but I wouldn't expect a lot of miles out of them if you drive much gravel.  Also, they don't come with a treadwear warranty where other all season tires do.

Where are you guys finding Cooper STs at Discount?  The closest Discount Tire for me is Spokane, and they only carry the Cooper Discoverer ATP and the SST.

After talking with the sales guy on the phone, I'm leaning really hard towards the BFG A/T.  He recommended it hands down over the Discoverer ATP.

I've put 150k miles on my truck on 2 different types of tires. Can't remember what the set was on it when I first bought it. First replacements I put a set of Toyo Open Country AT's and they were awesome but they were also $1300.00. I got close to 70k miles out of them. Now I'm running a cheap set of Goodyear Wranglers. They seem to be doing OK at probably 40k miles or so.

Weird, i have gotten the worst mileage out of my st maxx on my duramax.  Love cooper tires, but these only lasted 32k miles.  The at3's have gotten pretty poor results lately as well, not getting any where close to their claimed mileage.  Not sure what is going with cooper lately.

:) Toyo M-55's kick butt. wear like crazy. almost all loggers I know run them. Mine have over 50 K now and still have more tread than most new tires.

Great timely thread... I have a 2012 F150 ecoboost.

I have 33,000 on it right now and I am looking for tires.  I have never tired Cooper.

elkinrut,

That is similar to what I've experienced with STs.  I've run about four sets, getting 30k or so on each on a full sized pickup and driving a fair bit of gravel.

I also have brand new Cooper AT3's on a 2002 Ford Ecursion 7.3 I just purchased.  Seem to be pretty nice so far.  Nice and quiet.  Have Toyo Open County HD's on my Ford Centurion, 2rd set.... got 60 k plus on first set.  Did have Toyo MT's in between....crap.

I run mostly retreads on my 1 ton dually so new tires don't quite fit. Its really hard to find some one to cap them for you. there are a couple companies that do. One is out of Colorado. https://www.treadwright.com/default.aspx (https://www.treadwright.com/default.aspx) They offer tires in several different designs, many copy popular designs. As of yet i have not used their retreads but want to give them a try. Retreads have been used on everything from airforce one to trucks on the Baha 1000. Mileage IS important but bang for your buck is too...

I'm pretty sure my brother bought his Duratracs with a 50k mile warrenty. But I see now that they don't offer that. I'm currently at 73k on my Wrangler Silentarmor's on my 02 Silverado 1500. Need a new set before winter.

I have big Toyo MT's on my Excursion. Over 20k and they look new.
MT's are not for highway use (MT is Mud Terrain) pavement will chew them up.
I keep mine on gravel and dirt.
People can't complain about a tire when they buy the wrong ones because they look cool on their truck.

I get 7 mpg, that's OK for a truck that weighs in at 8800 lbs.

Discount tire will special order any tire on the market. I've done it with Toyo M/Ts after Les Schwab told me they were the exclusive distributer of Toyos in the NW...lol

I've had the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac since they came out in 285/75/16 on my 1/2 ton Silverado. I'd guess they have between 50-55k on them and they still have plenty of tread, look nearly new. They've been great for gravel roads, snow and ice, no issues with them at all. I did notice gas mileage seemed to go down some, but no matter the driving type I seem to be pretty stuck at about 14.5mpg's.

Thanks Rick.  I called Discount this morning to price tires, and actually both Perfection Tire and Tire Rama are cheaper for the Discoverer AT3 than Discount.

I did some reading last night and the AT3 is a VERY well reviewed tire by a lot of off-road magazines.

I am on a set of these in my 3/4 ton Dodge.  The performance is pretty good, they work well on snow, ice, etc.  I don't have a ton of mud driving in them, but from what I've done they've been adequate.  I don't know how they are holding up mileage wise as they were on the vehicle when I bought it.

Schwab is the exclusive dealer, but that only means they stock them and can offer a better warranty without Toyo's prior approval.

I bar them on myself. Its not really that hard to mount up a truck tire. the hardest part is getting them to seat. With a few bars, soap and an air chuck you can usually do it... or you may need a ratchet strap to help you seat them. depends on the kind of wheel size of the tire. You can also make a red neck bead blaster for about $50 out of a propane tank and a 3/4' ball valve and some pipe. not as good as the commercial ones but for MOST applications it works OK.

Since your in the valley I would point you to one of the used tire shops. They seem less concerned with how you got the tires... They just want to get paid to mount and balance. There may be others around but there are 2 nearly next to each other on old memorial across from skagit building salvage.

Do your research on these.  I looked into Treadwrights a while back, and for SRW and highway applications they may not be the best choice.

I don't have any from there. I have mostly bared on my own that i've bought off CL.  I've also been trying to figure out a way to get Hummer tires under my S10... Gona be hard to squeeze those 37 under there. the 33 work ok tho.

Tires are application specific. Anyone who demands race car performance on big 4x4 tires is asking for trouble... I suppose its OK to whine about ride and handling when you fork out close to $1500 for a set of tires, but i drive a truck not a steet queen.

Mine is no street queen either, but I do expect it to get me safely to remote destinations on hunting trips.  The last thing I need is a blowout in norther Nevada late at night.

Do a search for Treadwright tire failure and you'll find plenty of reading.

For a dually application on the drive tires, I wouldn't be nearly as concerned.  To put a set of four on a heavy full size pickup and take off for Montana or Wyoming on the interstate could be a recipe for disaster.

Most blow outs are  due to lack of air pressure. most of the "reatreads" you see along the road are not acually retreads. There have been a couple of studies on this issue. Since i have not run these tires i cannot comment on them specifically but i know from plenty of experience that tire failures 90+% of the time are due to air pressure. Would i run them on a F350 with a camper towing my jeep? probably not. Would i run them on my jeep? Hell yes.

A lot of people are using treadwrights on there daily drivers. I am a member on about 6 different forums that quite a few of the peoplebuy these. Then even use them while wheeling off road with 10-15 PSI. There is little to no complaints on them. These are on usually small to mid size SUV and trucks. I have seen a few more problems when they are used on heavy trucks like diesels.

Yes a while back 8+ years ago retreads were a very taboo thing and they had there problems, but it seems that most problems are fixed now. Just do a simple Google search treadwright and read the reviews for yourself. That is the best advise I could give you. I agree with Special T I wouldn't use them on a heavy diesel but would use them on a lighter weight vehicle.

JLS- Do a search on treadwright reviews and I bet you will find just as many good reviews as bad. And if you noticed most bad reviews are on diesel forums. As stated above I wouldn't put them on heavy duty trucks.

It stands to reason that full size would have more trouble. I would imagine that many people do not adjust their air pressure very often. I notice a HUGE difference in ride when i adjust my PSI on my one ton dually I run 35psi in the front and 60-max85? depending on what i'm hauling and how far i'm driving. For the last year or so I've actually been running Passenger rated tires on the fronts of my truck. I had some used ones with good rubber so i did some test loading and weighing and ran them.  I had one tire that seperated... I took it of before it went boom... Put the spare on, another P rated tire and finished my trip. Unlike many people I check my tires several times a week and before i take off on a long haul....

You are entirely correct, my truck is SRW diesel.  If I had a Jeep or some other light truck I wouldn't be nearly as concerned.

I didn't see very many issues at all for folks airing them down and using them for off road applications.  Most of the issues I found were heavy trucks driven on long stretches of freeway.

I'm not saying don't buy them, just saying do your research.
