Title: Grouse after a rain?
Post by: Cougar125 on September 20, 2013, 08:08:38 PM
Tomorrow morning I am going to take my wife on her first grouse hunt.  A friend pointed me to an area to look for them, but since I've never hunted them, I don't know if they'd be moving much after a rain.

Does anybody have any insight to this?

Follow dnr/fs roads and keep an eye on the sides of the roads. Seen tons today. Then again it wasnt raining.

if it stops raining and the sun comes out so will the grouse. My dog found one right off the road on Wednesday not 20 minutes after it stopped raining.

Hi guys I have never hunted grouse before but have gone out about four times now looking forsake in the Westport area a few times near the ocean spray cranberry plant by the johns river and then south east of johns river back into the logging roads I have drove 10+ miles back there up on the higher peaks and even gotta out walked through the Forrest in areas I thought would hold some of the birds but have not seen any?! Is there something I am doing wrong? I asked on here because it was rainin hard then let up and the sun came up and I still did not see one bird. I also have my beagle wit me running around which I thought would flush one or two out but nothing. Any help please and thank you in advance. I also was wondering if my .22 LR is legal to shoot these bird or should I use my shottie? I read in a couple of forums on here but kind of got a mixed answer thanks

Grouse hunting can be good after it rains. Seems to me they come out to open areas, perch on stumps/logs to dry out their feathers. They become a little easier to find since they're in more visible areas. I've had some good hunts after the rain lets up. Also, if you see one on the road while driving, get out and hunt the surrounding area as there may be more that you can't see. Good luck!

My favorite time to hunt them is right after a rain.  They come down to the roads to eat gravel and drink from the ditches.  Good Luck and don't forget to post pics.

Shot this one yesterday with a light sprinkle.....Big Blue
