Title: Seen a 7x1 Bull
Post by: Smossy on September 21, 2013, 12:39:21 PM
Seen a 7x1 bull the other day when I was in the Teanaway unit. He was gettin his freak on chasing a cow around.
How does' that happen? There was a nice 7 point on one side, and a huge long spike on the other... From a past break or something? I tried to take some photos but they're garbage and not even worth posting. No detail.

Could be a genetic mutation, or an old injury. :twocents:

Smossy here is a bull that my son shot two years ago. When he was younger he hurt his antler on that side. We got to see him grow up as he would come in an out of the area.

That bul would be legal in a spike bull unit, no?  :dunno:

Yes it would.

Yes it would.

This isn't correct. That bulls fork originates higher than 4" from the base. Not a spike.

Many years ago, one of the early Mill Creek hunts, a family friend turned photographed and turned down about 150 bulls before taking a massive bull on a foggy day near the end of his season. 7x1, 4 foot spike one side.  Not that unusual.

Like timber stalker stated that bull would not be a legal spike because of the fork originating way more than 4 inches above the skull cool looking rack none the less

The one that we seen had a decent 7 point, More like a 5 point with 2 more small 2"inch points sticking off.  The other side was CLEARLY a single long spike, no extra anything forking off.
I imagine its spike only unit way out there but I have western elk tags and I think elk seasons over anyways.

C'mon Smossy you should know when your tags are good for not just think so!  :chuckle:

On the OP, sounds like it could be an injury or inbred, cool to come across though  some of these low land bulls on the westside here that never move out of a 5 mile radius end up knocking up sisters and their moms over time  :bdid: need to shoot those things out of the gene pool that's for sure!

Tried to shoot a 5x1 on Bethel 6 years ago. He was with 3 other bulls all branch antler, a 6x6 4xx4 and a 3x2. was watching the and the 5 turned his head and the antler on the right was no more than a 3' flat sword, no eyeguard. He was headed to the freezer. Tried to fire and my rifle hangfired. Just klicked, Touched the bolt to eject and Boom. nolonger on the critter.  :bash:
