So a past co-worker/hunting partner showed me some pictures from one of his current co-workers attempt to tag a big buck last fall. The guy trains hunting dogs on the side and apparently had just picked up one of those GPS tracking collars that he had wanted for a long time, and finally talked his wife into letting him spend the money on it. Well, he managed to catch a live buck. This is how he said he did it but who knows if its entirely right. He said he was elk hunting during rifle westside elk. The last day of the season he was in the brush and came around the edge of some vine maple and there was a big 4 point buck standing about 20 feet away with his head just poked out above the brush. The guy was carrying a can of bear spray. He says he sprayed the buck in the face, it turned, and bolted away. The buck was overcome by the spray and couldnt see and ran right into a low hanging limb and knocked itself out cold. He says he hog tied the deer and went back to his truck where he oh so happened to have that GPS dog collar. When he got back the deer was coming to. He put the collar on one of the antlers and zip tied it there for good measure. Untied the deer and waited around till it eventually got up and left into the timber and brush. A couple days later when late buck season opened he came back and turned on his GPS reciever for the collar. He did manage to get the signal, but barely. He finally managed to narrow it down to a stand of reprod. He went it, gun up and ready, thinking he was gonna walk right up on the buck as the GPS said he was getting close. He found the collar busted in pieces barely working at the base of a tree that had been rubbed raw by the rutting buck. I laughed so hard. I dont know how much I believe too much of it but the pictures show a hog tied 4X4 with the collar attatched to the antler. Then the next ones show a busted up collar at the base of the tree. I thought this was pretty funny. Teach someone to do that to the deer and try cheating like that. He had spent a lot of money on that collar and now the wife wont let him get another one, she apparently just shook her head and called him stupid. hahahaha

That's a heck of a tale. I'm sure stranger things have happened by folks trying to get their deer.

Sounds like he should be hog-tied.

I was going to call b.s. on the story until you said you saw pics. Wow, just wow..... :o

He's an idiot, the GPS dog tracking collars have a very short battery life because they are constantly updateing information and emitting a signal. Old fashioned telemetry systems have a very very long battery life,I have a collar that had 16000 hour battery in it.My marshall collar will run at least 9 months,I know because I inadvertantly left it on from january to october,it runs on 2 AA batteries. Serves the moron right,if he's that dumb it's amazing he can get customers to train dogs for.

Yea, when my buddy told me about it I flat out called B.S. unless I saw the pics. I just dont quite believe how he caught the deer in the first place. The guy's brother-in-law is apparently a vet for large animals on farms and such. And my buddy told me he saw pics of a similar sized deer getting into the idiot's garden that has a 10 foot fence but a 5 foot gate. so it would find that man gate and jump it to the garden. My personal theory is that he actually got some kind of seditives and managed to trap it in the garden. But then again, why wouldn't he of just kept him there till season if he was trying to cheat?

guessing your buddy hasn't read or doesn't care about #14 on page 78 of the regs.....
-
My buddy only ever did small game while he hunted with me. He didnt read the regs much, just the waterfowl ones and only skimmed to check the limits and such, the rest of the time he just went by what I said was in the regs, told him he was lucky I am an honest guy when it comes to that, cause not reading them all is stupid. I told him that guy got lucky that I didnt hear about that around the time he did it last year. I think that would be enough to get me some extra draw points if turned him in.

I wouldn't turn in a buddy. Might kick his ass or learn him a little but.....
-
Never said the idiot was the buddy, haha, if it was I'd figure out a special way to make the point. The idiot is one of those cocky guys that always thinks anything he does is *censored*. Just works with my buddy.

I'm glad karma found a way to kick his butt then

There's a lot of DFW personnel who watch this site. You'll probably be gettin' a call.
