Title: need some advice.
Post by: Naches Sportsman on October 02, 2013, 09:09:17 AM
Yes, I know I am going to get crap for asking advice, but this is a time where we really need it.

I have been talking with my mother about hunting if the shutdown lasts until rifle season. She doesn't care about horns. We need the meat for us and other families in the same situation as us who don't hunt. I have thought about around here and on the westside but really don't know which would be better to do. I do know the packwood unit a little bit and also the unit off fs rd 70. This would be her first deer and again we would like to getter done on opening day so we can provide for other families as well. Thanks.

Hi and welcome. I don't have any advice for you other than this. I am assuming time and money are an issue? With this in mind hunting is not your best pick. If you live near a grocery outlet, wallmart, or some sort of discount supermarket you can get more meat for your dollar than spending that money on a deer hunt. Deer hunting is a sport, and is not cost effective. I have spent hundreds of dollars on deer hunts and been skunked. Probably could have bought half a beef for what I spent. Deer hunting is never a guarantee, and most hunters that have a honey hole worked very hard to find it and won't advertise it as it only invites every hunter that reads it, thus ruining his honey hole. If someone does give you advice, it might be someone playing a cruel prank on you and sending you to an area known to not produce game. I personally don't know any area's and finally this year have the time to hunt. So, I'm going camping, and hunt while I enjoy the camping. If I score some meat, bonus, if not..OK. Sorry if this not much help, but I am going out blind as you are. I am going out a few days early though to do a little scouting around to see if where I am hunting looks promising. If your really wanting to just provide meat for family and money is an issue, If I were you I would spend the money on meat from the store. License, tag, ammo, suplies, gas, at the least cost you 300.00 I surmise. Best of luck to you and your Mom should you decide to hunt. Prepare with safety in mind, and bad weather. Take care..

I'd stick closer to Naches, and hunt the areas you're most familiar with. The Packwood unit doesn't have any better deer numbers than the units closer to Naches.

However you do get 11 more days in October, and 4 additional days in November that you don't get on the east side, so that may be something to consider after October 20th.

If you want cheap food, hunting probably isn't the best way.....My wild meat is $200.00 a pound AT LEAST.   I'd buy a side of beef from a farmer if I was cost conscious.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you're hunting for meat to save money, in this state, you're going to have a hard time. I would be a lot of money ahead if I just bought a half a beef every year. I love eating wild game, and it's all I eat besides fish, but I don't know anyone who can do it and save money unless you kill one in your yard.

If it's just food you're looking to get.... the forests around packwood are chock full of mushrooms right now. You could easilly pick a couple hunds pounds.
