Buddy got this bear last night. I helped him with it this morning, all I can say is this thing is huge! All of you internet police will disagree, its a given but I was there. We put this bear on the scale with guts in and it came in at 404 lbs, 7ft nose to tail. I have never seen so much fat in my life! This was his first bear, shot it between the eyes 50yds up the hill off the road. A central washingtin bear.

from the 1st pic to the 2nd it looks like the dad and a cub.. Terrific kill and still a tank of a bear. congrats
-
So he gave me a backstrap, any tips on how to cook it?
-
I'm sure someone with more experience will have advice , but I've been told slow cooker. Some way that will get the fat out. I hear stews good too. I've only done sausage.
-
Low and slow like pot roast.
-
In the head? Doesnt that screw up your chance for boon and crocket?
-
WOW, what a toad.

I know, for many bears i would take the same shot, but that thing is a beast. It would be a shame if its skull was huge.
-
That is a very nice bear congrats!!! I would be so dang excited to harvest a bear like that. Good job
-
DANG CUB SHOOTERS :hello:

Beast of a bear your friend got there. Out of curiosity where was he taken?

Crock Pot is for the tough stuff! I would cook it like any other good cut of meat. With that much fat he's probably been eating berries so it should be fantastic eating. Unlike most big game you cook to medium rare bear, like pork, needs to be cooked medium well (165*) just to be safe. It has enough fat it will not get dry at that temperature like most big game will. Should be sweet, tender and yummy!

Here is a pic... def wouldnt want to deal with one in august! Weird to skin the fat away before you cut the meat out.
-
My Wife would Die for the fat off that thing for making soap.
-
That's a good size back strap. Perhaps try a smoker on a portion.
-
Doubt he looked like that in August! We've taken a good number of them like that in early October. All were outstanding vittles  That guy was probably barely a 350 boar in August. Got to love those October boar.
-
He has definitely been eating well ... that's why I would not waste my energy in August ...especially if your looking for one to mount or eat ....Bear makes some of the best summer Sausage known to man :EAT: Funny when you peel off all that hide and fat and there is not much meat :chuckle:

Beluga bear!
