Im headed to montana next month. I bought a new 300 short mag. I used to shoot a 270 and the ammo my father and i shoot is federal premium with barnes triple shock 165 gr. ( he shoots a 300 wsm) The gun store said they dont offer it anymore. I see a lot of ballistic tips, but my dad tried them and it just pierces right through deer without expanding while the triple shock knocks them down. So now im stuck and dont know what to buy and if i should go 165 or 180. Either way i have to sight it in tomorrow. Any recommendations?

180 gr Accubonds would be a good all around bullet for you.

:yeah:
Most experiences I've had with ballistic tips was very rapid expansion as opposed to none and a pass through. More likely with barnes if you ask me :dunno: I would stick with either an accubond or partition. Both would be excellent choices in that caliber for any game.

Okay. Thanks. I wish i could remember exactly what it was he shot, but it was a black ballistic tip. It just blew through his deer and you could hardly see the exit. It was a clean shot and shouldve dropped it a lot sooner.

Ballistic tips I shot a few years ago in my wsm went in the garbage! Tore elk to pieces.
Check out Fusion rounds. I sure like them.

I bought fusions just to hit some paper. If i cant find any accubonds at cabelas tonight, ill hunt with fusions i guess. Tomorrow is my one chance to sight it in so i have to settle tonight. I need it dead on at 400yds.

How long of a shot was the deer your dad took? Shoot an animal up close with a MV of 3000 fps and odds are against a lot of expansion. That same bullet will perform differently at 400 yds on an elk than it will close up on a deer. :twocents:
Shot placement also factors in of course. Hit a few bones, things change fast.

I don't know if they make ammunition with Hornady inter bonds but that is what I reload for my 300wsm. Great bullets that kill dead. They are responsible for the death of 3 bucks and 2 bulls (that all dropped in their tracks), since I've used them.

Sierra Berger VLD hunting bullet. I've shot a bunch of elk, deer, and 1 bear with and they are deadly!!!

I used to order them through the mail but Cabela's has them now and they pretty reasonable compared to the rest.

I asked him about it tonight and he told me the ballistic tip put a clean hole through both layers of a piece of box tubing so thats why he thought theyd pierce through a deer. They were winchester teflon tips. :chuckle: i couldve sworn he said it went through a deer but guess not. I tried to explain an animal has nothing in common with steels properties but hes not buying it. Soo... i guess i will have to find what works best for me. The triple shocks knock them down quickly. Last years deer went no more than 40 yards. Cabelas had some cheap Winchesters and that was it. I was really disappointed in their ammo selection. Looks like im buying fusions in the morning since noone carries anything elsep
