Well I was lucky this year and drew a toutle cow tag. I decided to hunt on the state land and set up a camp to let my daughter get the real feel for elk hunting on her first trip. We hunted from camp all morning finding lots of fresh sign and I knew it was only a matter of time until we got into them. We were walking on an old closed skid road when I spotted elk below us in the timber walking along us 100 yards away. I stopped and cow called and immediately got an answer from a cow. I set up in a shooting lane with my daughter spotting for me. The first elk to come out was a baron lead cow. I took aim and fired. The cow jumped and then the rest of the heard ran out in front of me, three more bulls. I waited for what seemed like forever" like 30 seconds" and the cow came stumbling out of the brush and leaned up next to a tree. I waited for a few seconds and when she cleared the tree I shot again and she hit the dirt. After getting my daughter calmed down we went down and found the cow a few minutes latter. I did put one more in the head because the first shot was a liver shot and the fallow up shot put her down but not all the way out.
We had a moderate pack out of about 1/4 mile, which took us three hours :chuckle:. It was a great hunt and trip for us only having one full day to hunt.

She loves to hunt, we coon hunt in the winter with our hounds. And I have been taking both my daughters deer hunting for three years. This was my oldest first elk hunt though and she loved it. All she can talk about now is hunters ed and getting to shoot at elk next year.

Thanks for all the compliments. Yeah are camp was alot of work. We left our place a 7:30 pm Friday night and got to camp at 11:45. We didn't get to sleep till 1:15 am. We were both up and hunting by 7:30 am and were gutting our elk by 11:30. Finished packing out @ 4:00 pm. Hung and skinned by 5:30. :IBCOOL: It was a fast turn around but worth it onehundred times over. I busted up camp @ 6:00 am and was on the road by 8:00 am sunday morning.
