Title: Tuna Trip Oct 13
Post by: GregE on October 14, 2013, 12:34:57 PM: On my fourth Tuna trip the goal of getting a bait stop going was finally realized. We had three tuna rookies in the 6 on board Kodak as we crept thru the fog to get a scoop of bait and headed across the nearly flat bar. The sunrise peered thru as we cleared the fog.

We didn't have fresh intel on locations and headed WSW oiut of Grays Harbor initially till we found fishy water and put the troll rods out then pulled them and went further SW after the jumpers didn't cooperate. Finally we got a hook up on a trolled swim bait that was promptly broken off. We got a couple more on cast swim baits and found the 30 # 8.5 ' spinning rods and Mikes salmon rod are up to handling Albacore but you'd better have your lunch. Live bait and chumming finally got things started and we had several doubles and nearly a triple as one was landed just as another hit.

Priority was given to the rookies for their first catch and everyone caught at least 3. Darren, SFF had the hot rods again and handed off several hook ups to other to bring in and also did yeoman work with the gaff.

We ran out of ice before live bait and tried to pass 3 dozen fast swimming anchovies to another boat but couldn't link up so headed back east at 1PM. We saw jumpers for several miles as far as the 124.7 area and stopped to pick up a Japanese float that waved to me. We also cut heads and pulled guts on most of the fish to get them into the limited ice better and still got back into the ramp at 3. The mostly flat water was a welcome change to earlier trips - two with 9 tuna and one skunk trip.

We lost a dozen fish mainly to lines breaking after catchin fish- note to self, check lines and retie often. Looking forward to next season and will get an earlier start chasing Tuna again!! :D

So you got pictures of that Osprey boat :tup:-- what size? Been looking at several different manufactures and models - trying to figure what I am going to go with in the very near future... Buddy had a 27ft Osprey that was awesome...

Post by: Mfowl on October 14, 2013, 09:17:13 PM: Nice fish! Way to go! My boss nailed them this weekend as well out of Westport. They had to go out 33 miles to find the fish. He said it was lights out fishing and calm waters.

Post by: GregE on October 15, 2013, 09:49:59 PM: Sunday was about as flat as you'll ever find in spots, some bands of low swells to watch for. Fish were widely active.

Kodak is a Osprey 26 Long Cabin with off shore outboard bracket.
