Title: Modern Westside Elk - advice?
Post by: wsucouga on October 16, 2013, 07:17:23 PM
I've been hunting the Eastside since 94.  Gonna change it up this year and try the Westside.  Any advice?  Not looking for anything specific - maybe just the pros and cons of each area?  I'm not afraid to get off the roads....or get wet.  Thanks!

Pick a unit, look at maps, get out of the truck...
Pretty vague request.   :dunno:
Pro-branch bull opportunity
Con-no snow, probably going to rain.

Think more hand to hand combat.  Your ears will be way more important in thick.  Clear cuts are your fiends, and the elk will tend to travel less from the dark holes.  When pushed they are not as likely to leave the country.  Don't press them and they will likely be in the same general area tomorrow.

Go Cougs!

Combat hunting! We like to glass clearcuts at first and last light. Then bust the brush with drives and pushes mid day.

Steep and deep timber with the wind in your face or quartering to you. Take a cow call cuz if you jump and bull and he hasn't smelled you he may stop when you cow call at him. I chased 2 bulls up a hill one time cow calling all the way. They stopped several times and actually saw me but didn't go far cuz I was cow calling. Finally got them to stop long enough to shoot the 5x5 about 300 yds from where the chase began with a 75 yd shot.

I'd stock up with lots of beer. It gets dark early and you will need a way to drown your sarows from being wet, cold and tired. :chuckle: Good luck it is three point and real big only!

Today's a good day because the Cougs beat the spread!!!!    I'm trying to decide what unit to hunt.  Considering I don't know anything about any of them it probably doesn't matter.  I was thinking about trying the Sol Duc...........whatcha think?

Sol Duc gets a good pounding by the early seasons, but there's still a few left over.  Lots of out of townies that have never scouted the area tend to show up and kick around a lot of brush.
