Heading out with two novice hunters and one cow tag. Looking forward to the get away time and crisp air. Has anyone been in the sagebrush area off the mill road? With the warm weather I don't expect to see them low yet but would like the novice to fill his cow tag. I'm driving a red crew cab DURAMAX with a winch on the front with a black grill guard. Usually stay of the middle fork but liable to see me anywhere in the unit. If you see the truck flag me down especially if you need help. I answer to Pat or Wildman. Good Luck to All
-
That's where they were for muzzy season. we got 2 cows in the sagebrush :)
-
Been a pretty big heard hanging out low off of Antanum road. Seen them a couple nights last week. Probably 80-100 animals.
-
thanks for the comments. see you all in the woods YAHOO

. If your talking about the herd about a mile up the north fork on the left side , they are in there every year. Also they are on private property.
-
My father in law killed his cow during muzzy season in the sage off the mill rd and I know of 3 bulls shot in there last week by permit holders. Also 2 other cows and a spike during muzzy season.
-
What's up with the Hatton Rd.. I hear it's closed. Is that true?
-
They been trying to close it for years
-
My buddy shot a nice spike down low in the muzzy season, he had lots of opportunity on other spikes as well.
-
Hatton Rd. is not closed. Just close the gates. It is a green dot road.
-
We spent a week up high at the head of weddle canyon and didnt see squat during muzzy season. Hadnt been an elk up there in months. Kept moving lower and lower til we ran out of time. No food up high during the dry summer i suspect has kept them down low. Never saw an elk in any camp we saw.
-
i was there for the opening weekend, didn't see a thing but going back out tomorrow to start hunting for a cow, good luck to all of you guys
-
:yeah: that's what i meant, left tue evening to start hunting on wed. just got back and no cow, i saw a few but they were in private property, :(
-
I say that landowner can kick rocks! Is that the road that they were talking about in the yakima herald a month or so ago?
-
I agree. He can huff and puff all he wants its a green dot. Screw him.
-
Opening morning the elk were up high in the Ewe neck area.
-
That guy on hatton is just a complete jerk and has no right to act the way he does
-
Hey not to burst your guys bubble but there are 6 landowners that the lower part of hatton goes thru, mine included. We have all signed are petion and got it ok'd for us to close down the lower part of hatton. It is not a green dot road until it hits state land by the power lines. Dnr wdfw have no say on are private land. We will be installing new gates with locks on them this fall/ spring.

Sweet first post! So you've petitioned to turn a public road into private?

is there a public release about it? I have heard it was a county road unless you guys are dealing with the same thing like happened up south cowiche.
I have heard that gates always get left open and landowners loose cattle sometimes. I however didn't see that much trash in which I always here people are dumping all their trash out there :dunno:,
-
Let me pop some corn. This is going to be good.
-
There's got to be an easement of some sort

. The road might go through your " private land" but I doubt you own the road. There has to be an easement ? Unless your just going to gate it of like the squatter's did up Cowiche Mill Dr.
-
Someone who lives over there should check with Yakima County and see if they can tell you if the county right of way goes all the way to public land. If anyone would know, it would be the county.

If it's a road that's been used for many years as if it were a public road, even if the county was never granted an official right of way through the private property, then in my opinion it should remain open to the public.
This may require a lawyer to get involved- IF the county won't do their job and not allow the road to be shut down by greedy private landowners.

I didnt see the road messy at all but if people did leave trash it wouldnt suprise me because the so called owners of the road treat us like *censored* I had one guy come up to my eindow with his pistol in his hand saying turn your car off and dont move telling us this is are only warning and never wants to see us on his road again
that one guy is a total jack ass

. The squatter's on Cowiche Mill rd pull the same s***!
-
Sounds like a fun place to go for a drive
-
Is it a gravel rd? Paved or chip sealed. I would contact the road manager for the county. They would know about it or the county right of way agent.
-
We do not have to leave open since there is another access from state land to the state land. It was not me who kicked you guys off this year it's a new guy that us retired and now living in his cabin full time. That lower part of hatton was started by my great grandfather when he was farming it. People just started driving on it with out asking and has been doing so for years. Sorry but we are closing it off. It's not a green dot road until you get up by the power lines. You can access it from the county road cowiche mill. That is a green dot which leads up to the green dot section of hatton. Why do people have to cause a fuss when they can't go on or thru private property? If it was your land I'm sure you would do the same. Be mad all you want but a solid gate along with 2 guys patrolling it will be in place very soon.

Well you and your buddies better be careful pointing guns at people. I will shoot anyone who points a gun at me and starts making threats. Period. See ya there.
-
I just looked at the map. It shows Hatton road is a county road all yhe way to the powerlines, where it joins the green dot system. Its a big black thick line running parallel to the mill road which is also a big thick black line. The legend shows the big thick black line indicates "county road". If its not the lock it.

Prohunter - First off, I think it's fantastic you're able to farm the same land as your great grandfather. That is something I for one will look to pass onto my grandkids some day - very cool. I understand why you'd want to protect it from trespassers.
That said, I'm sure you understand that if hunters are not hunting *on* your land but the county has provided the easement in the past can you explain what has caused you and others to pursue this action? You've only had a few posts on this forum so I for one would like to give you the benefit of the doubt and I'm sure most here don't have the benefit of knowing any or most of the issues you've had with irresponsible hunters or trespassers. I would be surprised if any of the encounters you had were from reputable members here.
Would you mind elaborating at the extend of issues you've had or other mitigating reasons you and the other owners are so motivated to prevent road access *through* your property if this has been apparently allowed by a county easement?
Thanks!

First off, I have never pointed a gun or threated a person with one! You guys come over once a year to hunt and think you own and know everything. Your not there when we have taken 8 dump truck loads of garbage out of it or had 6 cows shot or your water tanks shot and ax cuts in them, or have you seen are equipment vandalized and all are fences cut cause people want to go off road to get to an animal they shot. It's hard to put the blame on a few bad people, the point is it's private and stay off. You can bitch all you want and bring up all the maps you want but the fact is it's closed and we have the athority to keep people out. Are new gates will be up as well as retired master hunters patrolling the land. We were successful in 7 trespassing tickets this fall with more to come. Not trying to be an a$$ but it's private land and people are messing with the value and lively hood. Can I come and dump trash in your back yard, how would you feel?
-
Thats BS. I can see Hatton road from my kitchen window, there is little traffic on that road. I hardly see any trash on that road either. In frenches there is trash, but I never see trash in the ridge roads up hatton. If its a private road, then why havent you guys just locked the gate? The only trash I have ever seen on that road is the junk pile and at the new cabin on the left which is close to the road on the way up. His place is an eyesore no doubt. the water troughs are not anywhere near the road. You guys are just trying to bully your way into closing a public road like those squatters and druggies did in the southfork. every rig I see there is just driving through. The fences are notcapeable of holding cattle either, not cuz they have been cut but because they are ancient and no one has fixed them. I will be driving that road until the gate is locked, then i'll be at the sherrifs. The road is not private even if the land is.

Well, if they successfully petitioned the county to abandon it then it would be officially private. Were it my fate at stake, I would check with the county first.
YMMV :)
-
Lol, you have no idea where are troughs are at, your just an idiot that I can't wait to catch now! It will be locked this week !!!! Lol

This will be my last post are attorney is getting it approved. I don't have time to argue on here, I have gates to install and ditches to dig and pictures to take of trespassers and turn them in. Good day!
-
Il be up there the day after Thanksgiving. Love the area and look forward to a great cow hunt. Ill be in a a big black Duramax. Dont pull a gun on me >:(

Here is the report about my two novice hunters. Hunter one saw lots of deer and was amazed with the area. He got to see a branch antler bull from afar but no spikes. Hunter two who had a cow tag, saw one on day two at 125 yds but was looking into the sun and wasn't sure it was a cow or not so he didn't take the shot. Again on day 4 saw a cow but to far off. Short story but tag soup. Dawgfather went up two your campsite but didn't connect but thanks for the offer. For everyone else that offered up some info Thank You.

I remember going in on hatton a few years ago and no one had any problems with us as long as we always closed the gates. I

Somehow the squatters got that shut down too.

Hatton rd is a private rd for the landowners if you can read the sign it says end of country road. If you still want to try you will be stop for tresspassing which has a fine up to 5000 $ or more the landowners have posted signs there are game camera to get your vehicle and plates.

So which private land do you hunt or own?
-
it is private from the first gate all the way to forest land if you don't get read the game laws about tresspassing.

I've thought about burning max bull points for a branch antler rifle tag there. This is depressing!

This is simply an outright lie. Criminal trespass in the 2nd degree is a misdemeanor violation, which is punishable by a maximum fine of $1000. If the road is private fine, but you certainly don't need to make stuff up in order to bolster your cause.

Don't be discouraged. There are plenty of other areas up their that hold bulls.

Thanks for the good words. Maybe next year...

Interesting thread. Last year I tried to access Hatton Rd but saw the gate when I drove up and turned around. No one came out. It was late archery season. The waving the gun story is just ridiculous. That fool committed a felony. The fellas in the truck could have shot him and they would never see a prison cell, and for good reason. And the old guys "patrolling" for trespassers paints a comical picture in the mind---toy soldiers wearing diapers comes to mind!! Either way, its unfortunate that access is being limited.

When I got my $149.00 trespassing ticket (not $5000.00) on Cowichee Mill Rd the charges were quickly dismissed. My lawyer had an old DNR map that clearly showed the road to be a green dot system road going right threw the private section. My question is why has DNR allowed these people to gate what appears to be a public easement. I also heard a rumor that someone on an ATV died when they ran into one of these gates. The family members of the victim should have received millions of dollars in settlement. Maybe they did, I don't know. We all know the guy who put up the gate (probably to hide something) most likely doesn't have millions, therefore the lawyers should have gone after the DNR. Their bank account is bigger.
With timber company leases, wild olympics campaign, and discover pass fees we the sportsmen and women are paying too much for way to little. I don't even hunt near the area this thread is about, but I'm willing to help the cause. Wouldn't it be great to get 100 guys to chip in $100.00 dollars each and sick a couple of hungry lawyers onto the Yakima county commissioners or DNR and hold their feet to the fire on the subject. I think it would be better than bickering with individual land owners. Just an idea!

I believe person on atv was one of the people who helped put up gate actually kind of ironic , there's a lot that has gone on in the unit that's hard to understand why they these people do it

Anybody heard anything new on the Cowiche Mill Rd access to Reynolds Creek? Is the landowner(s) going to allow entry thru their property or not. Drove up there over the weekend. Went all the way to the end. Just wondering. Been hunting up there for 15 years, would sure like to get back up there.
