Title: Underhood cooking?
Post by: superdown on October 25, 2013, 10:13:49 AM
Anyone still do this? My Dads step-dad and other old guy friends of the family use to put a pot roast or pork roast and some vegetables wrapped in a bunch of aluminium foil. Sometimes some stew like Dinty Moore with some good quality all beef hotdogs or hot links. They would put it the engine compartment when they left home and by they got to camp or were done road hunting :chuckle: it would be hot and ready.been thinking about building some kind of hot box for under the hood.

Dude

Just buy a 12v oven  :chuckle:

They got pizza ovens, crock pots etc.   All for around 30 bucks.

Or you can just buy a propane camp oven,.

I have done it before to warm up breakfast sandwiches. I would wrap them in foil and get to my spot nice and early. As I was catching a cat nap with the engine running I would throw my sammy under the hood. It wouldn't get hot but warm enough for me.

Just had a flood of memories rush back about Grandpa cooking brats on the old Travelall manifold while we were cruising the NE corner roads for grouse...

That'll make a dedicated road hunter out of ya!

Just isn't the same.  Manifold cooking is the only way to get that elusive unburnt hydrocarbon flavor to your bratwurst  :chuckle:

Growing up we had a 1972 Ford F-250 crew cab that had a tool box at the bottom of the dash on the passenger side.  My Dad rerouted some duct from the heater to the box and put a cut a couple of cut out switches so we could heat up the box with or without heating the cab.  On long trips Mom would make us sausage or bacon biscuits and heat them up in the hot box.  Later on I used it to heat up sammiches while on hunting or fishing trips.  That thing was awesome!

This is hilarious! I thought us Mexicans only did this! I've had many a premade chorizo burritos that were warmed up by driving. Dad would take out the air filter for a short while to heat them up!!!

I've done this at work. Put whatever you want to heat up on the exhaust manifold of a loader or excavator. 30ish minutes later, presto, hot lunch.

Unless you have an older vintage rig, where on earth would you find the space to put a crock pot, let alone a sandwich? Ever look under the hood on late model vehicles?  :yike:
I could probably cook an entire Thanksgiving dinner under my Scout hood. I can't even SEE the exhaust manifold on my late model Jeep.

I do it a lot mostly in winter on wheeling trips in my Ford. Hot pockets or burritos wrapped in foil. Sure is nice having something hot after shoveling out that 7000 pound snow anchor  :chuckle:
