Title: Bear down-skull question
Post by: asl20bball on October 25, 2013, 04:05:05 PM
Question for u guys. I got my first archery bear recently and want to bleach out the skull. Anybody have any recommendations- boil? Bugs? If bugs do u guys buy them from somewhere or know who/where to go. I did call 1 taxi but seemed way too high for just for dropping a head n a bucket and letting bugs eat.

There is a lot more to cleaning a Bear skull than removing the meat.  You have to degrease it for quite a while (months).  If not your skull will yellow no matter how much you whiten it.  Beetles and Maceration are the best methods.

Unfortunately, cleaning the skull can be a long and messy process. A taxidermist handled it for me and did a nice job. For the $75 he charged me, I consider it to be well worth the money.
