I'm a newbie to elk hunting.  Does anyone use calling this time of year (late oct/first of nov)?  If yes, what techniques do you like to use?  I tried "here elky elky elky" yesterday to no success. :chuckle:

Cow calls, horny cow calls.   Even a bugle now and then like your pushing cows.    if all fails make a lot of excitement and elk will come in to check it out if anything.. Good luck!

First get yourself a hunters orange jumpsuit and then a hoochie mamma and run around the woods squeeking that thing as fast as you can and dont stop...they will run right to you  :chuckle:

In my experience, don't call.  They've been hammered with calls for a couple of months now and pretty much assume it's a hunter.  I've cow called at a small herd before in November and all they did was run away.

Don't do it unless you having nothing to lose. The reward isn't worth the risk in late season.

For the modern season I only use a cow call to stop them if they busted me and are heading out. More often then not they will pause to check it out again. Better off not blowing calls all day though.

I got into a bull two days ago.  I  thought I heard him so I pulled out the bugle and let one rip.  He answered right back.   THat was it though, just so I could locate him.  He had about 40 cows with him.  I cleared the hill I was on and there they were.  Kinda cool.   Other than that I wont call much.
