Title: Where are the ducks in central washington at right now?
Post by: ducks55 on November 02, 2008, 05:39:29 PM
Been out to Winchester Wasteway a few times this year and only have gotten a few ducks, is it just to early or is the population down this year?

Have not been there lately, but guess is the nicer end of Oct. weather has them setting in all the local reserves...i.e. North Potholes, Winchester, Frenchman Hills etc.  Too much bluebird weather.  Typical for end of Oct. and first week in November in the north basin.
I'd be hunting next week though...just before Veterans day and after.  Always good for first waves of northerns.  Most think it occurs later by 1 1/2 to 2 weeks later.....not.  Get in on the early action.

I may not be going out veterans day, I might wait until the weather gets pretty nasty and the northers start pushing down, broke my shotgun today though so I have to get a new one before I go back out.  >:(

Doesn't matter about weather around Veterans Day......9 out of 10 years new birds...stupid...decoy nicely.

Too warm yet so the migration is not taking place. It'll happen when the temp and the waterfowl's inner barometer says so. Just be patient.

Look at the weather this coming week....rain...cold front....thursday and friday lots of rain on the coast with some wind.  Futher north will be affected.  It doesn't take much to bring initial birds down.  That second week in Nov. can be fun....not to cold, lots of new dumb birds and not many hunters as they are still waiting for someone to announce the northerns are in...usually Thanksgiving week.  Hey...the initial waves come in before that.  But if you want to wait no big deal.  I can tell you I could always count on great shoots the 2nd week...in and around Veterans day.  Hard to pinpoint the exact day in that week but it happens.....and you'll know it.
Kind of like....9 out of 10 years in Wa. you can set your clock that there will be a wet, cooler week the last week in August.....just before the dove opener moving birds out of what looked like a great spot the week before.

Copied this from another forum.  Comment make by someone who lives in Moses Lake.

"FYI the northerns are starting to show up in Moses Lake."

Told ya.....you'll miss some good action if you pass on Veterans Day and that week, regardless of weather.
