Title: Caping of trophy animals (Bulls)
Post by: TMortensen on October 29, 2013, 09:34:57 AM
Seems that a lot of members on here are always concerned about why someone didn't cape out a trophy bull or buck. What does it matter to anyone except for the person that shot the animal? How bout we just congratulate them on a successful hunt and a great animal, instead of possibly making them feel bad that they screwed up by not capping it out or making them second guess their decision. Many people don't have room for such a mount. Just a little rant.

I have asked that question a few times and it was just out of curiosity. I do not think anyone is trying to make anyone feel bad.
And in reference to your last comment you can still cape your animal even if you do not plan to mount it, someone else may need a cape, or you can give it to your local taxidermist and they can use it if needed.
Out of all of the comments that people post on this site these are the ones that cause you to rant?

I agree. If someone doesn't want to mount their animal, who cares? I don't get why some people always seem to complain about that. One thing to consider- how many people have an extra $1000 laying around to spend on an elk head? I know I don't. If I ever kill a big bull, I will be doing a Euro.

Just remembered something- couple years ago I posted on here that if I was lucky and drew a sheep permit in this state, that I wasn't planning on having the head mounted.   :yike:

Wow!

You would have thought I just said I thought Obama was the best president ever!

I think to some, its a compliment, like man that is mount worthy, but other than that, I'm with Bobcat, its a lot of money.  I did some of mine on my own as a hobby, and that cut cost, but even that was some serious $$$.  I now have a trophy sitting out in my chicken pen.   Judge away. :chuckle:

Besides, I don't think some realize the reality of how big an elk mount is, let alone a moose.

I generally don't care what someone does with their animal so long as they treat it with respect and take all the meat.  I agree, the posts about cutting the cape get a little old (as do the orange police).  That being said, it's nice to use every part of the animal if you can.  There's all sorts of folks that could put the cape to use, even if you don't want to.  There's also a fellow on here that would love the hides (I've given him two in the last couple months).  Sometimes there's a long pack out involved, or other circumstances that discourage taking the extra weight.  But if it's not a lot of extra work, nice to give the cape or hide to someone who will put it to use.

I would hope you'd at least save the cape off of it, they are not only worth good money but to someone who needs a cape for their once in a lifetime kill, but somehow ruined theirs, its worth its weight in gold.

I've always said anything but a lifesize on a ram or goat is a waste but obviously not everyone agrees.

Preserving a true trophy is worth the money to me, whether I have the money or not, I'll find a way. But, to each their own... makes no difference to me.

I agree. My goat is at the taxidermist as we speak.

I don't get it :dunno:
It's your choice to do with an animal what you want but I think that it's pretty much a given fact that Barry O is the best president ever.

To me it is sort of like wasting meat on an animal. The hide is part of the animal you killed and should be used if possible. That being said I don't have a room full of deer hides, actually only one and that is for rawhide. I do have
5-6 Mt. Goat hides, and some bear hides laying around. I have 2 coastal brownies that I prepped for full body mounts if I ever have an extra $5000+ laying around ...

I was at a guys house the other day with some phenomenal animals on the wall. He shot one this year I would have mounted but just hacked out the skull cap because he has no more need of another mount and did not want to take the time and effort to cape it properly.

Thats because that's all they care about.  Filling the tag isn't important,  it's gotta be a trophy and it's gotta go on the wall.
