Slow so far or :dunno:

Sounds like Mr. Clements..

Mine didn't want to stay and talk. Pretty rude if you ask me.
All I saw was the south end of a north bound elk :lol4:
-
I have seen seven total during the rifle hunt. Most have been pretty small 5X5's.
-
there aint no westside bulls, everyone should head east next year and hunt spikes  :chuckle:

My theory is they all hoof-rotted to death.

Between hoof rot and the thousands of early cow tags there aren't many lower elevation resident cows left to give birth to them. But the WDFW wanted to reduce winter range deaths...so no elk left = success/few deaths!
-
I had seen a small herd of 12 that had 2 descent size bulls in it with nice racks, but that was early July. Haven't seen em since.
-
:yeah: Agreed. Many of the popular westside units have been hammered by both.
-
Just saw about 25 head ...one dandy 6x6 ....surprised he is still alive with all the tags out there :dunno: :chuckle:
-
We saw 3 elk in the Toutle in 3 days but 2 of them are back at home and ready to be butchered in my garage! Won't have any pics until a later date as I'm too busy getting ready for my Manson hunt this weekend. That's the hunt I'm excited for more than the Toutle bull.
-
Get out of the logging areas and hit the wilderness, even if you don't see an elk the scenery is much better than clear cuts
-
Been at winston all week and have not seen one elk! Even camp 9 only has one elk. Not sure what to do from here. :dunno:
-
Not everyone who hunts post on hunt-wa!

Returned today - we saw 3 elk being dragged out of the timber + 1 dead coyote in 4 days ,walked on 1 spike, seen 1 buck ,2 does and 1 grouse + lot of underpaper mushrooms and million of hunters ... :tung:

Ryderwood has been pretty slow. My brother and cousin each shot a bull out of Pe ell yesterday.
-
My dayghter and I watched a nice herd on the farm next to my brothers out in eatonville and the herd came onto his land 30 minutes after legal shooting hours :( There were 4 legal bulls and one large bull that had an injured rear leg but they were still making noise and fighting over a hot cow. Now I have to try and get out there and seal the deal this weekend.

Not a permit...general west side OTC unit. She was definitely excited. Her third elk and second bull but definitely her biggest. I was probably more excited than she was. Love to see the kids out there.

It was seven gills outfitters. Highly doubt 340. We had been watching it for a while.

That's what I was told also....I'm pretty sure it was the bull I seen in the back of. A truck Tuesday....he was a dandy...I was also told a disabled vet got it.....good for him if its true

I wish I knew. I found a couple of legal bulls with some cows and a legal bull by himself during early deer season, but have not been able to find any elk at all since the season started. Sounded like most of the legal bulls in one local herd were taken on opening morning, and the rest have apparently scattered.
I've never gone the whole season before without even seeing ANY elk. I haven't even found much in the way of sign, even in places that have always been heavily traveled in previous years. A friend's property that I sometimes hunt on and that has always had a LOT of elk traffic has had no fresh tracks or droppings since late October. The two legal bulls that were showing up on the game cam during deer season never showed up again after opening day. I think they were taken on opening morning by a large group of hunters that supposedly got six bulls on opening day over the ridge from that property.
I have a feeling that the hoof rot has something to do with it, too. Last year every group I saw had multiple limpers in it, cows calves and bulls all.
Me being a beginning hunter, on foot and by myself can't be helping much, either. I don't have the capacity to do multi person drives and flush the remaining bulls out of their hidey holes.
Willapa Hills GMU. One more day!
