Taking my 7 year old boy and Lab over to Moses Lake (area) this weekend. Any one seeing Notherns yet?
PM me if you don't want to post public. Thank you.

From the pics and what I have been told, the flooded corn fields south of the Potholes are loaded up with birds. Once they start banging you might see some good numbers of birds for about 45 minutes until they limit and pull out. Then if you bring binocs you might be in a spot to see the vortex's back into the flooded corn.

Got to hunt that flooded corn once.... and my my my..... now I realize where all the birds have gone. To bad it's all private... hoping my brother gets invited again, so I can tag along.
My dad and some friends are all going over to moses area this weekend, I can let you know what they say.

That corn is like crack for those mallards. It would amaze those that haven't experience a well rested corn pond. :yike: Single shot, youth .410's might possibly offer a challenge for the hunters in harvesting the birds. Might!

I hunted the very north end of Moses yesterday. Pretty slow. I managed to squeeze a hen gadwall and two geese. The geese was just dumb luck. I didn't even have a goose decoy out. They were just passing by unaware.

Just got back from camping out at the Potholes for a week and we had a good time hunting the reservoir. We just hunted till noon and only over a dz decoys but got 3-5 ducks everyday and missed or got the decoys buzzed by three times that many each day. We had a lot of teal, widgeon and gadwalls, only a couple of mallards.
Between the two of us we have a hundred+ years of duck hunting behind us and aren't very aggressive about limits, just enough to have a good meal and fun. I shoot a little English stocked 20ga or a 2 1/2" chambered 12ga Hammer sxs and my partner was using one of my old skeet guns.

Same story for us.... though we didn't camp.
We got 3 by noon, and headed home.
It's still pretty slow.
No northerns in yet.
We saw a bunch of shovlers and mergansers.
Only got 1 green head which looked like it was local.
very few birds flying, those that were, are all early season birds like gadwals and teal.
Crazy weekend. NEVER have I seen so many boats and trucks there. :dunno:
Every boat that came in that we talked too, said about the same. They all had 1 duck in the boat.

So I went over to "Moses," shot 11 ducks, greenheads, pintail and 1 canvasback which is the first for me. I thought it was a decent weekend. Couple of greenies were notherns.

Spent Sat, Sun, Mon and Tue in the potholes area and we averaged 20 ducks a day plus some bonus geese on the first three days along with one Ringneck. We only spent about 2-3 hours of hunting for 4 guys and only shot at mallards although we used 7 dozen good looking decoys. Passed on a lot of other ducks. The birds would really slow down after about 9:30am. Almost all ducks were northern type with nice yellow fat. On Wed went with Shane Moon of Northflight and got some really big Honks. We had never done that before and it was addicting.
