So I am tired of being an internet fisher. I want to learn how to really catch the fish and not snag them. if there is anyone around the shelton area that want to meet me on the skok tomorrow and not do the combat fishing style I am willing to learn.

I think you should have chum running at Hoodsport hatchery around now ......look into that

I'm in the same boat as you, started fishing this year. Just get out there and continue learning. I'm learning something new everytime I go out. And definitely read here, I've learned a lot by reading and trying what others are trying. Try different lures and set ups. Also been pretty lucky by asking the guys next to me on what they're doing. For the most part people will share their knowledge.

Get away from Skoke fishing is your first step to becomming a good fisher. High pressure Salmon only bite with there buttmouths.

Wish I could help but I am not a river fisherman. I know a buddy of mine who is a newb as well, fished the skoke this weekend and did fairly well on some chums.

Fish Hoodsport, the mouth of John's Creek down in Shelton, or places you see fish jumping along hood canal. Set-up with a bobber and anchovy.

The rivers are starting to get a little out of shape right now. But I wouldn't mind showing you the ropes. I'll supply you any gear you need/don't have. All bait supplied aswell. We can hit the Satsop

We can always hit the skok if it drops back into shape soon or other local chum spots in the salt aswell. Johns creek is fun with a float and anchovies or herring.

you guys mentioned using a bobber and a herring or anchovy , you use just a regular old red and white bobber and a chunk of herring or the whole thing ? how much of a leader ?

In saltwater, use about a 4-5" "cigar" shaped float above a bead, then a swivel. From the swivel down rig 4-5 feet of 40 pound mono, 2 3/0 or 4/0 hooks like a mooching rig. Hook your whole herring so that it rides straight up and down with the head pointing up. About half way down your leader either pinch on a couple of large split shot or one of those removable weights with the rubber in the middle to get your herring down. Cast the rig just up current from cruising pods of chum and let them come to it. Just let it float dead. My Dad lives on Totten inlet with no bank waterfront. I set him up with this rig a few years back and he has fun just sitting on the bulkhead with a beer and letting the rig do it's thing. He has caught quite a few chums that way. He throws them all back but it sure is fun for a bored old guy like him. :chuckle: Every now and then he will pick up a dogfish.
