Title: Best coyote gun and gear?
Post by: silverdalesauer on November 07, 2013, 08:43:38 AM
Been considering getting into yote hunting here on the west side. Would love your thoughts on a gun, gear, and possible places to hunt.

gun - 22-250 in whatever brand you like
gear - random camo that you already own and a hand distress call for $7 at walmart.
places - somewhere where you can see a little bit

243 Winchester is a great all around cartridge. Maybe a little more than is necessary for coyotes, but good to have if a cougar happens to come in. Although on the other hand, for a bobcat it really may be more than you want and could result in a much larger hole than desired.

For a call, if you can afford an electronic call, Foxpro has a good reputation.

The best places to hunt- private farm land is what I would suggest, if you can get access to any. Otherwise try clearcut areas on state or private timberland.

Pretty much anything you feel comfortable and competent shooting, yotes are small and fast!

I have a Rem 788 in .22-250 & a Marlin .22 mag, but am also considering a shotgun for this side of the mountains for some of the brushier spots.   But I will put a hole in one with whatever I have at the moment if given the chance.

Camo that blends with or at least doesn't starkly contrast with your hiding spot, wind direction and movement on your part are generally speaking, more important than camo.

Hand calls are cheap, light to carry, and effective.  Electronic ones have their uses as well.

Locations where you have a fairly good field of view, bordering some type of cover, areas with tracks on/beside the road or trails, poop in the road, or food sources like farms.  Places that will not allow deer & elk hunters can often be persuaded to allow coyote hunters to protect their chickens, livestock, etc.  Never hurts to ask.

Id go 223rem, 22-250rem, 22-250ackle,220swift, 223wssm that way you wont be bugged in an area open to biggame for hunting yote. The 223wssm if wicked fast but can be hard to find ammo for. Barrel life is decent as long as you dont push the light bullets at make loads. The 220swift is fast and harder to find ammo for the the 223 or22-250. The 22-250 is a great round and the ackle is faster then a 220. The 223 is the slowest and cheapest. It can throw out a 55gr around 3100-3200 which can put the hurt on a yote, bob or cougar. Get a gun and round that fits what you want it to do. Ar's are great for predators most shoot just as well or better then bolt guns and they have faster twists to let you shot heavier bullets.

I dont think what gun you shoot matters. If a budget is your problem use your deer gun...It'll work until you decide you really can afford to get a new one. how many places on the wet side will you shoot over 200 yards unless you get into farm country?

Foxpro call or a hand call. 223 or I would consider the 204, ammo seems to be easy to find and it does a number on dogs. Camo, whatever blends in

Savage 17 WSM B Mag for the westside. Calls are whatever you want to learn on. RR Calls has some very nice calls and easy to use.

Pick a caliber you don't have and buy it......Just another reason to add to the collection.  I got started with the 22-250 and now also have a .223.  I wouldn't hesitate to shoot one with my .270 though and am comfortable with all three.

Calls...I wish I knew the answer.  I am still learning the calling aspect of coyote hunting.  Some make it look so easy but I really struggle for some reason.   :twocents:

I guess practice makes perfect.

Don't rule out the .20 cals either.  I have .223 guns, 6mm (243) guns, and .204 guns, and I love the 20's so much that now I carry my AR in .20 LBC (6.5 Grendel necked down to .204) almost exclusively.  A friend has a .20 Tactical AR that I was most impressed with when I shot it at the range, and it is no more than a .223/5.56 case necked down to .204, so if you lose some brass in the brush, it's not a big concern.

For calls I have a FoxPro Scorpion, for the simple reason that it's small and packable, even in a pocket.  I also have several mouth calls in both open reed and closed reed.  I like RR Calls the best, and have had the best response to them of all my calls.

I have lots of camo wear, and even have a Ghillie Suit.  But the yarn on the Ghillie snags on EVERYTHING, so I don't like it that much.  Next time I'll go for the leafy camo wear.  If there is such a thing as being a sucker for calls and camo, I'm it!  :chuckle:

Are you keeping the fur? Or bang flop an let them rot. That will depend on what rifle to use. Cheap distress calls work great electronic calls are better.

If you're trying to call them in close (within 50yds), don't rule out a shotgun if you don't have a rifle. #3 buckshot works well.

Two gun stands - Rem 40X .22-250 on bi-pod, with Benelli SBE II in lap.
One Gun stands - Ruger mini 14 with 2.5x8 Leupold and red dot on side of scope.
Nighttime - Sako 6mm/.223(6x45) with Leupold illuminated 1.5x5 with Nightforce PredX light mounted on scope, and Magnalight handheld spotlight.
Calls - FoxPro for electronic.... Trying Shock Wave right now, don't think you can go wrong with FoxPro.
Hand calls.... I have over 200 in my cabinet, when I am successful with one it goes into the display cabinet. So many factors so much more important to your success than the call.....wind being and approach are what I always focus on. My opinion, just about any call will work, we probably all have our favorite, but I haven't found that "Magical one" yet, but I keep looking. Be careful getting into the call collecting, it gets expensive when you start going custom!  :) :twocents:

They pretty much covered them all ...Just pick one and let the lead fly  I used a .243 all my life and I love it ...then I finally broke down and bought me a .223 and I love it too ...it worked fine on my cougar with a 55 gr hornaday ....He took a quick dirt nap

Has anyone shot a yote with  .22 mag, will that be powerful enough to drop one?

never a .22 mag but dropped a few with a .22lr at 50 yards or less. So can't see why a mag couldn't do it.

Almost any cartridge will work. I prefer low recoil so I don't lose my sight picture when the gun goes off. Get a good open reed call they won't freeze up on you like a closed reed can. Using shooting sticks or bipod will increase your success. Good luck

I haven't heard anyone say a thing about a shotgun. I might not stay with only a shotgun, but if you have one you can be hunting today. Rolled up a dog at 60 yards using #4 buck a couple years ago.  :twocents:

yep

Look at DFW waterfowl areas once the season is over most will have yotes who are use to hunting cripples. Steel loads, and plugged   gun. But  it can work.

Long range work, .243 across canyons, wind is always blowing over here.
Snow shoeing around canyon rims after the snow flies or calling them in close.  5.56 light gun.

Best coyote gun for the west side.  O/U combo gun with double triggers(no selector to deal with) and hammerless so you can mount the scope low for fast target acquisition.  The biggest problem is hard charging close in coyotes, having instant selection of rifle or shotgun seals the deal.

Bernardelli 12ga/5.6x50R Mag(222 Rem Mag Rimmed) Leupold 1x4x20mm Heavy Duplex scope(Trying a Weaver V-3 in the pic)

You can find nice combos under a K.,  Biakal has as 12ga/223 for around &600 new.

That's a great o/u combo. I have been caught out more than once with the wrong weapon, especially hunting westside coyotes. I use a short barreled o/u 12 gauge when the woods are thick.

That's the nice thing about a combo you can reach out across a clear cut if you have to.

Been eyeing something like that for awhile now. Never fails when I walk with the kids for their deer tags, take the shotgun see yotes or take the ar and see grouse.
