Title: Northeast Whitetails Let's see em
Post by: Palmer on November 04, 2008, 05:55:07 AM
I'd like to hear how the hunting is.  I'm heading out on the 15 and hunting Sat - Wed. in 113.  Let me know if rattling or grunting has been effective.  Good luck everyone.

Last year I rattled in a 1 1/2 year old within 10 yards on my last day and it was a nice little 4 pt.  I hope to do a little better this year.

Muleys fired this week.  It will be about another week for the whitetails.  THey are almost always a week behind.  It was a bit early for the Muleys this year so you should be in luck.

Just got back from a wee bit south of Chewelah... hunted private ground and adjacent state land... saw 6 does friday evening, three does sat morning, 5 does alongside the road saturday evening, and a doe/fawn on the drive out today...  Covered A LOT of ground and it was FOGGED IN BAD!  We averaged maybe 20-60 yards visibility with mixed rain showers... didn't mind the rain, hated the fog.  Still hunted through a LOT of timber and never busted a buck or nothing.  Saw a couple scrapes that were a day or two old on friday but they hadn't been revisited since today...  Tough hunting but we had fun!

Every year since I was 9 I have got a deer in that corner of the state. Since I was 14 I've gotten a 4pt or larger each year. No trick, some private land, mostly luck, and more important, patients...  ;

these are the deer that I have taken from 2002 to 2007 GMU's 101 - 124 and everything in between.

I cant even guess how many miles I walked and how many hours I watched scrape lines for these deer. Besides that there is the distances that I had to drag them to get them back to the truck. None of these animals where near the road. Two where near the 5 mile mark off of the road actually. The closest was the mule deer at about 1/2 mile.  :chuckle: Lots of walking in the dark.  :hunter:

I'm not surprised.  You have to do what others are not willing to do.  You've been rewarded nicely for your efforts!  ;)

Nice bucks everyone. I'd love to late archery hunt that area but I just can't find the time to spend up there to be real successfull. Those whitetail take more time than people think. Especially the big old bucks.

He was super massive bodied, by far the biggest deer I have ever shot or seen in person. I didn't get to weigh him, but he was big. It took all the effort I had to drag him to the truck.

Some are taken on paper and state land and some on private, but the private wasnt exclusive to us only, just about anyone could hunt it if they asked. I have taken 21 4x4 or better whitetails, my dad has got somewhere around 35 or so, wish I had all of our pics on the puter.
Novice that deer looks like it weighs 300 lbs  :)

Just got back from 8 days in the Northport area - tough huntin this year. I saw 7 deer in 8 days, 3 of them bucks (2 spikes) but no good shot. When I left camp there was only one deer hangin and we had 8 hunters. The one hangin was the only deer that guy saw in 7 days. There were a couple of other camps near by that had taken 1 or 2 deer but nothing big. Weather and a full moon on clear nights made it difficult to find deer during the day. It looked like the rut was just getting good when I had to leave. Hopefully the rest of the guys will tag out in the last three days.
