Title: Take a step back. MT deer hunt
Post by: Craig on November 12, 2013, 09:34:00 AM
Took my son hunting on his first real hunting trip. We went to a friends place in Montana.

This trip reminded me about having fun and what hunting with your son is all about.

I could not sit on a hill in 30 degree weather all day and 20 mph winds for more then two hours without going back to the house to warm up.

I could not hike for miles on end with him in tow.

we had to go back and eat while there are 30 doe and 4 bucks in view.

scaring deer away because you have to answer questions  and explain what we are doing and why we are doing it.

keeping a 9 year old to set still is hard.

explaining why we are not shooting a buck thats right in front of us.

All these things make you come back to reality that size is not everything and spending quality time in the woods with your kids is the best thing in the world. I shot the my smallest buck ever but I would not trade it for a 200' buck hunting by myself. His smile lasted for 2 hours and its all he talks about is deer hunting with dad.   :). Now there is one more young kid hooked on hunting.

Great pics. And I totally agree that even a little spike in this situation would be a bigger trophy & memory than a 200" buck solo!
Love that badger shot too.
I'm sure you've heard it plenty of times but that boy couldn't be mistaken for anybody's but yours.

I don't know about a spike vs. 200" but it I'm glad that you enjoyed time with Jr.

Nice badger and gun   Did you guys case-skin that badger?  Getting it tanned?

Awesome trip.

That would be SUPER cool.  Having gone to the University of Wisconsin, a mounted badger for the house has always been on my bucket list.  Came real close in MT a few years ago but the little bugger was just too quick for me.

Good for you.  Isn't perspective a wonderful thing?  One of my best elk hunts ever was shooting a 2x2 bull with my daughter laying right beside me watching.
