Title: stupid bobcat!
Post by: deerhunter_98520 on November 16, 2013, 08:33:26 PM
So my morning started out at leaving the house at 330am to make sure I get my spot...there's been a lot more traffic in my area with the weyco permits for Vail and pe ell...thanks weyco  well about an hour and a half after sun up some jack wagon decides to come stroll through the middle of the clear cut I've been watching....I stand up to alert him of my presence but him and his buddy doesn't give a crap and keeps on truckin....I said a few words and walked back up to my truck...yesterday I had a guy on a RAZR drive in on this spot....its a walk in only  :bash: not a good way to start my day...anyways fast forward to 3:30....a doe comes out with a spike on chase and he runs her around without stopping right back into the timber  :bash: about 5 min later and 200 yds farther in the cut a nice fork horn steps out and is on a mission looking for does...nose down and only stops once through the cut....I ranged it and it was 635yds to far for me so I just watched....he wandered off and the spike eventually came back out and would not present a clear shot...he stopped behind a little pine And bedded down  :bash: I have 45 min till dark so I make my move and close the distance....I get about 200 yds closer and a doe is staring at me so I just freeze....she kept looking at her back trail  and I figured a bigger buck was on his way out to steal her away from the spike....nope wrong...a bobcat decides to sneak up to the bedded spike...jump up on a log and have a stare down with this spike at no more than 10ft away  :yike: and you think I have a small game lisence  :bash: I've only seen once cat in the wild...so now I can't see the spike clear enough for a shot and cant shoot the bobcat...well the spike and doe had enough of the cat and ran up the timberline...the doe stops and the spike mounts her  :chuckle:..(as if the bobcat encounter wasn't enough)....the doe wasn't in the mood and bucked him off and she smacked him with her head and off she went and he followed not giving me another shot.....there's always tomorrow so hopefully one of them will be back

There's another thread on here where a guy and his friend were hunting a clear cut and some jack wagon jumped up and ruined it. Nice post though.

It ended up being a pretty good day....that's the last thing I wanna do is screw up someone's hunt....if I was them and when I walked out and seen someone glassin this hole I would have turned around...not walk through the middle and screw it up...this has been the worst season as far as other hunters respect I have ever seen

it doesn't bother me if someone walks thru a clearcut that I am sitting and watching.  They may push a buck/doe out to me.  As long as I can see them so I know which direction to not shoot.
That was cool, seeing a bobcat!

It was that way at one time, during deer & elk seasons, bobcats could be taken on a big game lic., but that changed several years ago.

sounds like a good wildlife day!  No sense in wasting a bobber with a deer rifle anyway.  Come back with your small cal rifle and get him.

The small game license will cost twice as much if you didn't buy it when you bought your big game licenses. It's about $18 if you get the combo deal, around $36 if you buy it later.

I didn't get the small game license one time because I didn't have the money and didn't know if I was going to need it anyway. Later my neighbor asked me to go goose hunting with him. I went online to buy the small game license and it was going to be almost $40.

I refused to pay that much so didn't get to go goose hunting.   :bash:

What are the chances of calling this bobcat in? Never predator hunted before really...called a couple coyotes and that's it....but I'm thinking about trying it out...would it be worth the $40 for the small game lisence and try?

i think it would be worth it, i know i am gettn one, there are alot more bobies out there than a guy thinks, they are mostly a nocturnal critter, but from what i hear if your within earshot a cat will come in fairly quickly, but they also lose interest easy so you gotta do alot of loooooong sequences, which is where i think i went wrong last year or the good lord was lookn out for me for not havin a sg licence

They don't generally charge in like a coyote, after all, they are cats...quiet and stealthy.  But nothing is 100% always/every time, specially when it comes to critters and their behavior.

What are the chances of calling this bobcat in? Never predator hunted before really...called a couple coyotes and that's it....but I'm thinking about trying it out...would it be worth the $40 for the small game lisence and try?

They may sneak in and sit and watch from cover for a long time, sometimes coming and going without the caller knowing it.   Since they sight hunters, good camo (daytime) and concealment of movements on your part are important.

An ecaller's speaker located away from where you are step-up and maybe some type of visual attractant like a bird wing, feather, anything that will draw their eyes towards it and the source of the sound and away from you helps.

The visual will also help with coyotes as well.

Pay close attention to the surrounding area, cover edges, etc...may only see a head or part of a face through cover.

At least you got to see the spike trying to make love---not everyone can enjoy that and many myself included never have seen it. Your story sounded like a story from the movies--all the stuff we see out there is really priceless. :twocents: :twocents:
